CHICAGO, Ill. -- Having played 113 minutes in her career heading into Wednesday night's non-conference women's soccer matchup against Illinois-Chicago, sophomore Camryn Degrafft played her usual role by coming into the contest midway through the first half to be solid on defense and give the starters a rest. But on this night, it was hard for the starters to get too much rest on the bench as they were up and cheering the brilliant goal by DeGrafft as Indiana State edged UIC by the score of 1-0 at Flames Field in downtown Chicago.
ISU leveled their season record at 2-2-1 while the Flames fell to 0-5-0. It was the second meeting in the all-time series between a pair of programs which were established since the turn of the century. The Sycamores have won both matchups, including one victory each in Chicago and Terre Haute.
DeGrafft was the story on the offensive side of the field as she entered the game looking to make her normal solid contributions to close out the first half. In the 32nd minute, DeGrafft took a free kick that bounced off a crowd in front of the net and it was just her and the goalie as she possessed the ball just inside the 18 yard box. DeGrafft then took her first career shot with a high arcing kick that went over the mass of humanity and eventually past the outstretched arms of the Flames goalkeeper and into the back of the net. At the 31:50 mark, the Sycamores led 1-0 despite the Flames holding the lion's share of early shot attempts.
The Flames managed 12 shots in the match, but only two were put on target. The first came with a long shot in the 69th minute but goalkeeper
Hannah Sullivan navigated the slippery pitch and smothered UIC's first shot on goal for the save. Sophomore
Danielle Varner continued to be key for the Sycamores on defense providing a front line of defense to the Flames attack and clearing several attacks before a shot was attempted.
Hannah Sullivan finished the match with two saves and posted her fourth career shutout and second of the season. Sullivan recorded a big time save in the 79th minute when a hot shot off the foot of Flames' Rebeca Pallo went right into her arms to hold UIC at bay, trailing 1-0.
Katie Wells,
Katie Sidloski,
Alise Emser,
Sidney Ewing,
Kathryn Besserman and
Danielle Varner all owned shots in the match plus the score from Camryn Degrafft. The Flames held a 12-7 edge in shots while ISU added a shot on goal from Emser as shots on target were level at 2. The Sycamores had their first success of the year at getting to the corner as they held a 6-4 advantage in corner kicks.
The Sycamores return to action on Friday, August 31 when they travel to Akron at 7 pm (ET). The game can be seen live on the Zips Digital Network.
