ST. LOUIS - Indiana State has been chosen to host the 2019 Missouri Valley Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships for the second consecutive year, which will take place from May 10-12, 2019 at the Gibson Track and Field Complex.
"We are extremely excited to be able to host again," program director
Angela Martin said. "Conference is a great meet and we're proud of the way we hosted last year and I think we will keep building on that. Hopefully everybody will enjoy coming back to Terre Haute and we will put on a great meet."
This will be the third time in four years that ISU has been chosen to host the conference meet, as it hosted the 2018 outdoor championships four weeks ago in May and the school also hosted the championships in 2016. 2016 was the first season that the outdoor championships had three days of action on ESPN3. Overall, 2019 will be the ninth time that Indiana State has hosted the MVC Outdoor Championships, as it hosted in 1980, 1988, 1993, 1996, 2001, 2009, 2016 and 2018.
"I think it's exciting that we get to host our third conference championship in the new facility here at the Gibson Track and Field Complex," associate head coach
Jeff Martin said. "Not only do we have the opportunity to showcase the facility again, it's another chance for the university to step up and the city of Terre Haute to show what we have to offer to the MVC as well."
The Gibson Track & Field Complex is named for longtime Indiana State supporters Max and Jackie Gibson and their family, whose gift enabled initial construction of the facility. The Gibsons were also instrumental in the development of the nationally renowned LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course, which has hosted the NCAA Championships a total of 12 times since 2002.
The complex was completed in the spring of 2015 and dedicated before a standing-room crowd at the Gibson Invitational on April 16, 2015. A three-story press box facility was completed in May 2016.
Included at the facility is a state-of-the-art 400-meter track, as well as accommodations for multi-directional options for all NCAA field events. A Daktronics video board also adorns the northwest corner of the facility with the option for multiple video boards elsewhere throughout the facility for larger meets.
These site awards were approved by the league's Joint Committee (faculty athletics representatives, directors of athletics and senior woman administrators of each institution) and are subject to ratification at the MVC Presidents' Council meeting on June 13-14.
