TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Indiana State baseball took a 9-1 lead into the fourth inning, but No. 23 Dallas Baptist rallied to score 11 runs in the final five innings of the game en route to the series tying 12-10 win Saturday afternoon at Bob Warn Field.
The Sycamore 19-15, 4-7 MVC) offense looked unstoppable for much of the game, scoring three runs in three different innings but the Patriot offense caught fire midway through the game and it didn't slow down. A five-run eighth inning for the Patriots was too much to overcome as the Trees put the go-ahead run at the plate in the ninth but a groundout ended the threat.
Clay Dungan opened the game with a hit-by-pitch and came around to give Indiana State the lead after a triple from
CJ Huntley.
Chris Ayers would cap off the inning with a two-run home run -- his third of the season.
The Trees added three more runs in the second on four hits, including a two-run double from
Jarrod Watkins down the line in left.
Dane Giesler joined the hitting clinic in the fourth with his seventh home run of the season and the Sycamores looked to be cruising, until the fourth inning.
Dallas Baptist (24-12, 6-2 MVC) scored one run in the third on a solo home run from the nine-hole hitter Luke Brandy but the Patriot offense really go things going in the fifth and sixth innings when DBU was able to string together eight hits to score six runs to cut into the ISU lead.
Indiana State answered with a run in the bottom of the sixth to make it 10-7 but the Patriots continued their offensive barrage in the eighth with five runs on three hits, including back-to-back doubles from Garrett Wolforth and Evan Sandmann which scored three of the five runs.
CJ Huntley finished a home run short of the cycle on a 3-for-4 day at the plate with three RBIs.
Clay Dungan and
Jarrod Watkins also collected three hits in the game for the Sycamores.
Triston Polley went five and a third innings, allowing seven runs in the no-decision.
Ethan Larrison was charged with the loss out of the bullpen after giving up five runs in two innings to fall to 1-4 on the season.
Kragen Kechely picked up the win out of the bullpen for the Patriots, improving to 3-0 after two innings of work in which he allowed just a hit.
Dallas Baptist outhit Indiana State 17-14 on the afternoon while capitalizing on a pair of Sycamore errors.
The two teams will battle for the series Sunday afternoon at Bob Warn Field. Southpaw
Tristan Weaver will toe the mound with a first pitch set for noon ET.
