TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Indiana State baseball fell to No. 23 Dallas Baptist in the rubber game Sunday afternoon at Bob Warn Field, 7-3. With the loss, the Sycamores fell to 19-16 on the season and 4-8 in Missouri Valley Conference play while the Patriots moved to 25-12 overall and 7-2 in MVC action.
The two ball clubs traded runs during the first three innings of action with the first five scoring plays coming on sacrifice flies. The Sycamores notched the first run of the game in the second inning after
Jake Means drew a one-out walk. The junior would move to third on a single from
Roberto Enriquez to right field before coming in to score on
Luke Fegen's ball deep to left field.
The Patriots answered with two runs in the third after loading the bases with no outs. A sacrifice fly off the bat of Luke Granberg would tie the game and move another runner to third before Matt Duce would put the Pats ahead with a sac fly to right field.
The Trees would tie the game in the bottom of the third as
Chris Ayers collected an RBI on a fly ball to centerfield. Dallas Baptist notched two runs in the fifth to take a 4-3 lead before Tim Millard secured the insurance runs the Patriots would need with a three-run home run in the seventh. The rest was academic.
Junior lefty
Tristan Weaver (2-3) was charged with the loss after allowing three earned runs in four innings of work.
Weston Rivers give up a pair of runs in two innings of relief while
Dalton Laney allowed a hit and two runs in one and two-third innings.
Geremy Guerrero finished the game, allowing two baserunners in the final inning and a third.
Jarrod Watkins finished with two base hits for the Sycamores while
Luke Fegen went 1-for-3 with a pair of RBIs.
DBU starting pitcher Trevor Coon went five innings, allowing two runs on five hits to move to 5-0 on the year. Jarod Boyle tossed the final three and two-third innings for the Patriots en route to his first save of the season.
DBU outhit Indiana State 8-7 in the game while the Sycamores left nine men on base.
The Sycamores will begin an eight-game road swing starting Tuesday at Northern Illinois.
