Sycamore Baseball Falls in Extras to Purdue, 3-1

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Indiana State fell to Purdue in 10 innings Tuesday night at Bob Warn Field. The Boilermakers scored two runs in the top of the 10th and held on to improve to 16-15 while the Sycamores dropped their third-straight game moving to 17-14 on the season.

Purdue loaded the bases in the first inning with no outs but was only able to walk away with one run, scored on an infield single to third base as the Sycamores would get a double play that included an outfield assist from centerfielder Luke Fegen and a strikeout to end the threat.

After early struggles, Sycamore starting pitcher Tyler Whitbread settled down to allow just one run in two and a third innings. Reliever Geremy Guerrero was phenomenal out of the bullpen, going four and two-third innings, giving up just one hit and striking out five.

Purdue's Trent Johnson and Patrick Smith combined to allow just one hit in five innings as the Boilermakers made several defensive plays to keep the Sycamores off the bases.

It wasn't until the sixth inning that the Sycamores would crack into the scoring column. After CJ Huntley reached base on a fielder's choice, redshirt senior Dane Gielser sent a ball deep to centerfield to score Huntley from first to tie the game.

The Boilermakers would get things going in the 10th inning, loading the bases and scoring on a sacrifice fly to center to take a 2-1 lead. Following the play, reliever Ethan Larrison looked to call for time and exchange a ball with in the dugout, but umpires called the ball out of play, allowing the Purdue baserunners to each advance two bases; scoring the runner from second.

That would be all the scoring Purdue would need as Ross Learnard would retire ISU in the bottom half to secure the victory.

Pitching dominated much of the game as the teams combined for 21 total strikeouts. The Sycamores went down looking seven times in the game, including three-straight in the seventh inning alone. Purdue would go down looking six times.

Jarrod Watkins reached base four times in the game finishing with three walks and 1-for-2.

Alec Olund was the lone Boilermaker to record multiple hits.

Ethan Larrison (1-3) was charged with the loss after going two innings and not allowing an earned run. Learnard earned the win, moving to 2-1 after finishing the final two and a third innings.

The Sycamores will look to avenge the loss Wednesday evening in West Lafayette, Ind. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. from Alexander Field.
