WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Indiana State snapped a three-game skid Wednesday evening at Alexander Field with a 2-1 victory over Purdue. The Sycamores outhit the Boilermakers, 9-4 in the game.
Indiana State (18-14) got all they could ask out of starting pitcher
Weston Rivers who toed the mound for just the second time this season. The southpaw went five and two-third innings -- just one out shy of tying a career long outing that came back in 2016 against Illinois.
Rivers allowed just one hit which came in the first inning on a one-out double. He went on to retire 16 of the next 17 batters he faced to finish his day, including nine-straight prior to his exit from the game.
Indiana State got on the scoreboard in the second inning after
CJ Huntley capitalized for a three-base error out in right field. He would come in to score two batters later on a sacrifice fly of the bat of
Hayden Jaco.
The Trees would add a run in the fifth inning after
Roberto Enriquez led off the frame with his team-leading 16th hit-by-pitch of the year. He would move to second on a wild pitch, forcing the Boilermakers to intentionally walk left-handed batter
Dane Giesler before going to the bullpen for right-hander to face
Jake Means.
Means, a junior, would make Purdue pay with a single through the right side to add an insurance run.
The Boilermakers (16-16) would make things interesting in the eighth with two infield singles -- their first hit since the first inning. Reliever
Dalton Laney would give up a bases-loaded walk to give Purdue a run but the redshirt freshman looked to be out of the inning with a groundout to second base but catcher's interference was called to load the bases.
Laney would throw two pitches to Purdue cleanup man Jacson McGowan before the Trees went to the bullpen for left-hander
Tyler Grauer.
Grauer would pick up three-straight strike calls to end the inning and would close out the game for the four-out save -- his second of the season.
Rivers collected his first win of the season, improving to 1-0 while Ryan Beard fell to 1-3 for the Boilermakers.
CJ Huntley finished 2-for-4 with a double while
Clay Dungan also collected a pair of hits.
Jake Means and
Hayden Jaco each tallied a hit and a run batted in.
Indiana State put the leadoff man on in five of the first six innings, but stranded nine runners.
Indiana State plays host to No. 25 Dallas Baptist in the three-games series this weekend at Bob Warn Field.
