TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Indiana State baseball dropped the series finale to visiting Illinois State, 5-2, Sunday afternoon at Bob Warn Field to fall to 17-13 overall and 3-6 in Missouri Valley Conference play.
Tristan Weaver (2-2) made his return to the mound after battling injury, going five innings on a pitch count. The southpaw struck out six and did not allow a walk but was tagged for four runs -- three that came off a three-run home run from Tyson Hays in the second inning to give Illinois State the early advantage.
Dalton Laney went two and a third innings, allowing one run on one hit while
Ethan Larrison finished the final inning and two-thirds.
It wasn't until the sixth inning that Indiana State would crack the scoreboard as ISU was set with runners on the corners and two outs for redshirt senior
Dane Giesler. Giesler singled to right field to score
Jake Means from third but the inning would come to a close though as
Hayden Jaco was tagged out trying to move from first to third on the play.
ISU looked to close the gap again in the seventh after loading the bases, but a double play would end the threat.
Jarrod Watkins singled in a run in the bottom of the ninth and the Sycamores brought the tying run to the plate in
CJ Huntley with two on and two outs but a groundout to first would end the rally and give the series to the Redbirds (14-17, 4-5 MVC)
Clay Dungan was the lone Sycamore to record multiple hits on the day finishing 2-for-4.
Matt Walker earned the win, improving to 4-0 after going six complete innings and allowing just one run.
The Sycamores play host to Purdue Tuesday at Bob Warn Field. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. ET.
