Sycamores Take Series Opener Over The Citadel Friday Night, 10-3

CHARLESTON, S.C. - Indiana State baseball opened their Spring Break trip to Charleston, South Carolina with a 10-3 victory over The Citadel Friday night at Joe Riley Park.

Right-hander Tyler Ward (3-1) went a career-long eight and a third innings in the contest, striking out seven batters and allowing just one walk en route to his third win of the season. Ward entered the ninth with a shutout before the Bulldogs (8-9) got things going with a leadoff single and a throwing error to put runners in scoring position. The Bulldogs would tally three runs in the final frame before reliever Geremy Guerrero would close out the contest.

The Sycamores were led offensively by Clay Dungan and Jake Means who each picked up three hits while sophomore Max Wright was 2-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs scored.

The Sycamores (9-5) scored a run in the first inning as Dungan drove in Jarrod Watkins with a single through the right side to open the game. Indiana State would not score again until the fifth inning when Max Wright picked up one of his team-leading three RBI's on a single to right. The Trees really got things going in the final three innings, plating seven runs to secure the victory.

A three-run eighth inning was kick started with Roberto Enriquez collecting his team-leading seventh hit-by-pitch followed by Romero Harris' single to right. Wright, a sophomore, would push Enriquez and Harris across the plate in the inning with a single to left. Wright would later cap off the scoring after heading home on a wild pitch. The rest was academic.

The Sycamores outhit The Citadel 14-6 on the evening, but stranded 10 runners while hitting into a pair of double plays in the first and third innings.

Dylan Spence was charged with the loss for The Citadel after allowing two earned runs in six complete innings. Spence faced 27 batters and allowed nine hits as he fell to 0-2 on the season.

Lefty Triston Polley will look to clinch the series with The Citadel as the team's matchup Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. ET. Fans can watch the game via the SOCON Digital Network or listen to the game with Luke Martin on the call on GoSycamores.com/Watch.
