CHARLESTON, S.C. - It was a masterful pitching performance for Indiana State junior
Triston Polley Saturday afternoon as he paved the way for the Sycamores' fifth-straight win with a 7-3 victory over The Citadel (8-10) at Joe Riley Park.
CJ Huntley paced Indiana State (10-5) at the plate with a three-hit day while
Romero Harris was 2-for-5 with three RBIs. Six Sycamores recorded base hits on the afternoon, as junior
Roberto Enriquez also joined the multi-hit club with a 2-for-5 day with two runs scored and an RBI.
Indiana State battled the elements early on as a steady rain poured over the area up until the third inning of play. The rain did not deter Sycamore newcomer
Romero Harris as he belted his team-leading fifth home run on a two-run blast in the second inning over the left-field wall.
Junior shortstop
Clay Dungan connected on his first home run of the season in the third inning on an opposite field shot to make it 3-0 in favor of the Sycamores.
ISU would add on to the lead in the fifth inning taking advantage of a Bulldog error while spraying three hits around the field for four runs.
Jarrod Watkins reached on a throwing error and was moved to third on a sac bunt. The Citadel looked to setup a double play when they intentionally walked Dungan.
Watkins would score the fourth run of the contest on a sacrifice fly off the bat of
Dane Tofteland before
Roberto Enriquez doubled home Dungan on a ball down the line in right field.
Romero Harris brought home Enriquez on a single to right before
Jake Means capped off the scoring after being hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
From the start of the game, southpaw
Triston Polley was dominant. The Avon, Indiana product improved to 4-1 on the season after going seven and a third innings allowing just one earned run that would come in the eighth inning. Polley faced 25 batters and allowed a pair of hits as he let the defense behind him do most of the work.
Donnie Ames closed out the final inning and two-thirds. The right-hander from Terre Haute was tagged four two runs on four hits in the outing while striking out three batters.
The Citadel's Jordan Merritt was charged with the loss after allowing three runs and eight hits in four and two-third innings. The loss moved the right-hander to 1-2 on the season.
The Sycamores will look for the series sweep Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. ET as
