TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Things got real interesting midway through the second half when visiting Truman State went ahead but the Sycamores went on a decisive 22-0 run as they held the Bulldogs scoreless for five and a minutes en route to a 77-69 victory today (Dec. 8) inside Hulman Center.
The Sycamores have now won six of their last seven and improved to 6-2 on the season. Truman State declared this game as one of their exhibition contests and their record remains 5-5. ISU is now 4-0 all-time against Truman State. Both ISU head coach
Greg Lansing and Truman State head coach Jeff Horner are members of the Iowa High School Basketball Hall of Fame as are their fathers -- making it a matchup between the younger of two of the 15 all-time father/son duos in that Hall of Fame. Horner played at Iowa where Lansing served as an assistant coach in the mid-2000's.
On the floor, the Bulldogs showed the same fight that Horner showed with the Hawkeyes as they hit 12 3-pointers in the game and put four scorers in double digits despite playing last night, driving into the early morning hours and getting up to play a game that began at Noon Central time. ISU responded by hitting 31-of-55 shots (56.4 percent) and were 8-of-15 in the game from distance (53.3 percent). The Sycamores held a 33-25 edge on the glass and dished out a season-best 22 assists and picked up seven steals as well as five blocked shots.
"We knew Truman would play us tough," head coach
Greg Lansing said. "He was a tough player at Iowa and we knew that his team would play tough and execute very well. As far as us? We are in a little bit of a rut and we have got to find a way to get out of it. We will get out of it. I would like to see us be able to handle adversity and criticism a little bit better than we are right now. I would rather be 8-0 or 7-1, but with the schedule we have played a 6-2 record is not too darn bad."
Tyreke Key led the way with a new career-high 26 points as he hit 11-of-15 from the field, including a pair of 3-pointers. He added four rebounds and four assists in the contest.
Jordan Barnes also topped the 20-point mark as he drained 20 points, connecting on six 3-pointers to go with nine assists in the win.
Emondre Rickman tallied a career-best 12 points as he hit 5-of-7 from the field and added three blocked shots.
Allante Holston scored a career-high 10 points as he hit 5-of-8 from the field and dished out four assists.
A 3-pointer from Truman's Jacob Socha gave the Bulldogs' a 47-46 lead with 13:31 remaining and then he made it a four-point play by tacking on a free throw and TSU led it 48-46. Barnes countered with a trifecta of his own to push ISU ahead a points but Brodric Thomas scored from distance on the next trip down the floor to push TSU ahead 50-49. Barnes connected on a long jumper at the 12:45 mark to push the Sycamores ahead and to kick start the big 22-0 run.
Barnes hit his second 3-pointer of the game for a 54-50 lead before finding Key in the left corner for a triple of his own at the 11:03 mark for a 57-50 lead. Barnes made it a trio of 3-pointers in a row to extend the lead out to double digits before Key scored outside the paint for the 62-50 cushion. Rickman was fouled inside and hit both of his free throws then made it four points in a row on the next trip for the 66-50 lead.
Barnes would added another trifecta and Key floated a jumper in the paint into the bottom of the net for the 71-50 lead to complete the 22-0 run and flip a one-point deficit into a 71-50 lead with 7:31 to play.
But Truman would fight back to score the game's next 11 points and trim the Sycamore lead down to 71-61 with 4:40 to go. ISU's offensive drought lasted nearly five minutes itself before Key went into the paint to score and restore a 73-61 lead with 3:22 on the clock. Hunter Strait buried a 3-pointer with nine seconds remaining but it would not be enough as the Sycamores escaped with a 77-69 victory.
Turner Scott led Truman with 14 points.
The Sycamores now pause for Final Exams before hitting the road this coming weekend for a nationally-televised game at TCU. The game which is slated for Sunday, December 16 at 5:00 pm (ET) on ESPNU.
