QUICK HITS
THREE TREES EARN VALLEY WEEKLY HONORS
Ryan Boyle,
Jonas Griffith and
Jerry Nunez have each earned Missouri Valley Football Conference weekly honors following their performances during the Sycamores' 43-17 victory at Youngstown State, the league office announced Sunday. Boyle was tabbed MVFC Newcomer of the Week for the third time this season; Griffith earned Defensive Player of the Week honors; while Nunez claimed the Valley's Special Teams Player of the Week for the second time in his career.
It marks the first time since 2014 that the Sycamores have claimed three of the Valley's weekly awards. ISU's Mike Perish, Connor Underwood and Gary Owens earned conference honors after defeating No. 22 Liberty, 38-19 September 27, 2014 inside Memorial Stadium.
SERIES HISTORY WITH THE COYOTES
South Dakota leads the all-time series with Indiana State dating back to 2013, 3-1. The Sycamores won the first meeting in Terre Haute, 45-14 in 2013, but since that time, South Dakota has reeled off three-straight wins in the series. The Coyotes won last season's meeting in Vermillion, 56-6.
TURNING THE CORNER
Coming off an 0-11 season a year ago, the Sycamores were picked to finish last in the Missouri Valley Football Conference with just one vote not assuming the worst in 2018. The Sycamores are now 4-4 on the season and have won a pair of MVFC games. The team's win at Youngstown State Saturday marked the first time that ISU has won two consecutive road MVFC games since 2014 and the first time since 2016 that the Sycamores have won consecutive games.
RED ZONE SUCCESS
One of the keys this season for the Sycamores has been their success when entering the red zone. ISU ranks 12th nationally and has scored in the red zone 29-of-32 times for a 91 percent average. Last season, ISU entered the red zone just 19 times over 11 games with only nine touchdowns. This season, the Sycamores have 20 touchdowns and seven made field goals through seven games.
THE STREAK COMES TO AN END
Indiana State football snapped a 14-game MVFC losing streak dating back to 2016 after defeating Southern Illinois, 24-21 to spoil the Saluki Homecoming. The win marked the first MVFC win for head coach
Curt Mallory and the fourth straight against SIU in Carbondale. The Sycamores moved to 4-1 inside Saluki Stadium with the lone loss coming during its inaugural year of 2010.
