TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – There was a different vibe at ISU Arena Saturday night. For a change, the Sycamores enjoyed a little bit of red and a different kind of leaf. On Canada Night, Indiana State – with four Canadians on its roster – came out of the gate on a mission and stunned Bradley in a 3-1 win in Missouri Valley Conference action.
Perhaps fueled by the tribute to their home nation, Alberta native
Cassie Kawa hit .320 and put down 11 kills. Saskatchewan native
Rhiannon Morozoff tallied a career-high four block assists and had four digs along with her seven kills. And Indiana State tallied the win with set scores of 29-27, 28-26, 21-25 and 26-24.
It's not the first time this has happened. The Sycamores (9-16, 2-11) have now won eight of the last 10 over the Braves including their last five at home. And ISU now has a 23-12 all-time record at home against Bradley (19-6, 9-4).
But a 3-1 final doesn't describe how close the match could have gone the other way. The first two sets required extra points to win, as did the final set. Bradley put down five more kills than the host Sycamores. And Erica Haslag led the visitors with 28 kills.
However, Indiana State had three players in double-digit kills and three in double-digit digs, led by the double-double (19 kills, 23 assists) by
Laura Gross. And the Sycamores hit an impressive .247, the team's highest mark since mid-September.
