Katie Wells Scores Record Breaking Goal At Illinois State

NORMAL, Ill. -- Katie Wells scored late for the Sycamores as she pushed in her 10th goal of the season to tie an Indiana State school record for goals in a season and set a new single-season point standard. ISU fell to Illinois State 3-1 on Wednesday night (Oct. 17).

The Sycamores fell to 6-7-3, 0-4-1 MVC while Illinois State improved to 8-7-2, 3-2 MVC. Illinois State has won all 13 meetings in the all-time series at home against Indiana State.

In the 81st minute, Katie Wells took a free kick and put the ball into the bottom right corner of the net to get ISU within 3-1 of the Redbirds. The goal was Well's tenth of the season which tied Abby Reed's school record set in 2013 and gave her 26 points on the season -- which is a new Sycamore single-season school record. She now has 22 career goals which gets within three of Lauren Podolski's school record of 25.

The Redbirds struck first in the 24th minute as Natalie Vaughn-Low took an assist from Abby Basler for the quick 1-0 lead. Kate Del Fava scored in the 34th minute to stretch the lead out to 2-0. 

Katie Wells had a chance in the waning seconds of the first half when the Redbirds were whistled for a foul just outside of the penalty box. Wells took the ball and tried to hit the bottom right corner of the goal but Illinois State goalkeeper Haley Smith made the correct guess and stopped the ball as the horn sounded.

Illinois State scored again in the 60th minute when Shaina Dudas took her own rebound off the post and scored her third goal of the season for a 3-0 advantage.

Caitlyn Eddy owned a pair of shots, both of which were on goal.Katie Wells had six shots include three on frame. Alise Emser, Katie Sidloski, Kathryn Besserman and Alina Steffen each added shots on goal. In the 81st minute, Pam Silies added a shot on goal for the Sycamores.

Overall, the Redbirds and Sycamores were tied in shots at 17, including a 10-10 tie in shots on goal. Hannah Sullivan set a new career high with saves in goal. 

Indiana State returns to action in the regular season home finale on Sunday, October 21 as the Sycamores host Drake at 1 pm (ET) inside Memorial Stadium.
