TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- On a cold and rainy night at Memorial Stadium, the Sycamore offense really started to click in the second half, putting an early goal on the board after halftime but two scores from the Panthers in the opening stanza proved to be too much to overcome as visiting UNI earned a hard-fought 2-1 victory in front of 389 hearty fans.
The Sycamores fell to 6-6-3, 0-3-1 MVC while UNI improved to 7-6-2, 2-2 MVC as part of this weekend's Homecoming festivities at Indiana State University.Â
Trailing 2-0 at halftime, the Sycamores put together a concerted second half offensive attack after returning to the field from the locker room. It paid immediate dividends as
Katie Wells scored in the 51st minute off a rebound from a shot that hit the crossbar from senior
Caitlyn Eddy. The ball went straight down about five yards from the front of the net where Wells was there and punched the ball into the right corner of the net to get ISU within 2-1. The goal was Well's ninth of the season which puts her only one shy of Abby Reed's school record of 10 which was set in 2013. Wells' nine goals are the most in the Missouri Valley Conference and tie her for second-best in a single season with Alison Gasparovich from the 2010 campaign. She now has 21 goals in her career which is second-most ever at ISU and trails Lauren Podolski's school record of 25 by only four.
UNI built its lead in the 16th minute when Jordyn Rolli took a rebound off the right post and pushed the ball into the net for the 1-0 lead. It was extended in the 31st minute when Brynell Yount took a long pass from Clair Netten and dribbled inside the box where her shot went past a diving
Hannah Sullivan and the Panthers led 2-0 at the break.
Indiana State had its chances for an equalizer several times in the second half as Eddy once again put a strike on the ball but a diving stop kept the Sycamores at bay in the 53rd minute.
Pam Silies had good looks in the 56th and 57th minutes as one attempt sailed high and another hit off the cross bar.
Alise Emser tried a shot in the 78th minute but her attempt was stymied by the goal keeper as well.
The Sycamores held a 19-8 edge in shot attempts including a 9-6 margin in shots on goal.
Katie Wells led the way with five shots, including three on goal. Eddy took four swings at the net and had three on frame.
Katie Sidloski made two shot attempts on goal early in the contest.
Pam Silies and
Lindsey Anstine also had two shots a piece for the Sycamores.
Hannah Sullivan faced six shots on goal and came up with four saves as she blanked the Panthers in the second half to allow for Indiana State's rally attempt. Corner kicks were level at four.
Indiana State returns to action on Wednesday, October 17 when they travel to Illinois State in Missouri Valley Conference play. Kickoff is set for 7 pm (ET) and will be televised nationally on ESPN+.
