EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Indiana State baseball picked up a series win Sunday after defeating Evansville, 5-3, at Braun Stadium. With the win, the Sycamores improved to 15-13 overall and 2-1 in Missouri Valley Conference play.
The Aces (10-22, 1-2 MVC) made things interesting in the final innings, including loaded the bases with no outs in the ninth. Sycamore closer
Austin Conway came in with two on and no outs and battled his way to his sixth save of the season after striking out one and inducing a pair of pop outs to end the game.
It wasn't until the third inning that the Sycamores were able to get on the board, thanks to a solo home run to left from
Tony Rosselli. The senior finished the afternoon 2-for-4 after singling in the eighth. The home run marked his third of the season and the first of MVC play.
Sophomore
Chris Ayers later doubled home
CJ Huntley later in the inning to make it a 2-0 lead for the Trees.
Indiana State added three more runs in the fourth and fifth innings to their lead. In his first action of the series, freshman
Danny Camilo singled up the middle to lead off the fourth and would eventually come around to score after
Dane Giesler singled to left.
Junior
Tyler Friis added a pair of insurance runs that would be crucial in the fifth on a two-run single over the second baseman to score
Dominic Bifano and
Chris Ayers.
Junior
Will Kincanon (2-3) put together one of his strongest outings of the season as he went 6.1 shutout innings while striking out seven Purple Aces batters. In total, the Aces were able to spray five hits against Kincanon on the afternoon.
The Aces broke up the shutout in the eighth after loading the bases with no outs. The Sycamores went to the bullpen in
Ethan Larrison to get the club out of the inning. The right-hander came in and struck out the first batter he saw, but an error at third allowed the first run of the day to score for UE. The Aces would add another run on a groundout to first before Larrison induced the inning-ending ground ball to Friis at shortstop to limit the damage.
ISU showed good vision on the day; drawing a season high eight walks in the game. Rosselli, Bifano and Ayers each had two walks.
Indiana State struggled early, leaving two runners on base in each of the first five innings. In all, the Trees left 12 runners on base in the game.
After playing 24 of their first 28 games away from Terre Haute, the Sycamores will return to Bob Warn Field for the next six contest starting with Indiana Tuesday at 6 p.m. ET. Tickets are available for purchase
HERE and at the gate. First year head football coach
Curt Mallory will throw out a ceremonial first pitch prior to the game.
