TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Indiana State baseball left eight runners on base as the team fell to in-state opponent Indiana, 2-0 Tuesday night at Bob Warn Field. With the loss, the Sycamores split the season series with the Hoosiers as both teams won on the opponent's home field.
Indiana State (15-14) pitching was strong throughout the night, but the Hoosiers were able to get on base in the fifth inning after being shut down through the first third of the game. Logan Sowers delivered the go-ahead run on an RBI double to right center one out in the inning, scoring Luke Miller who singled to lead off the frame. IU would add an insurance run in fifth as well as Jeremy Houston hit a sac fly two batters later.
ISU looked to answer back in the bottom of the inning, loading the bases with no outs after
Danny Camilo and
Tyler Friis walked before
Dane Giesler singled to the pitcher. A strikeout from senior
Tony Rosselli and a groundball double play from
Clay Dungan would end the Sycamore threat.
That would be all the scoring IU (17-13-2) needed to hold on for the win as the pitching staff held the Sycamore battery at bay for much of the game.
For the game, Indiana State left eight batters on the bases with two each in the first, second and fifth innings alone.
Senior
Ryan Keaffaber was charged with the loss, falling to 2-3 on the year after giving up the two runs in five complete innings on just four hits.
Damon Olds pitched 2.2 solid innings out of the bullpen for the Sycamores, striking out two and allowing just one hit.
Seniors
Kyle Moore and
Tony Rosselli led the charge at the plate, picking up two hits each.
Tim Herrin (4-2) picked up the win for the Hoosiers, going three innings in a staff start, giving up three hits and striking out two.
The loss marked the third time this season that the Sycamores have been shutout with the last time coming on the road at Washington March 11.
The Sycamores continue their six-game homestand Friday when they play host to MVC foe Southern Illinois. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. from Bob Warn Field. The first 200 fans will receive a free Indiana State window cling.
