TAMPA – Indiana State Softball will head down to Tampa for Spring Break for an eight-game slate at the USF Tournament from March 10-15.
The Sycamores will take on eight opponents in five days of action in Tampa: La Salle (March 10, 9:15 a.m.), Yale (March 10, 2 p.m.), Mount St. Mary's (March 11, 11:30 a.m.), Providence (March 11, 2 p.m.), Holy Cross (March 12, 9 a.m.), Cleveland State (March 14, 11:30 a.m., Clermont, Fla.), Monmouth (March 15, 9 a.m.) and Army (March 15, 11 a.m.).
LAST TIME OUT
Indiana State is coming off a solid 3-2 performance at the Louisville Red & Black Tournament to improve to 8-6 on the season overall -- the best start in 14 games since 2014 (9-5). In Louisville, ISU scored wins against Bowling Green (3-2) and Green Bay (4-0) before a big finale win over Louisville (8-6) in extra innings. It was the first win over Louisville in four chances this season after two narrow one-run losses at UNLV's Sportco Kick Off Classic in February and a five-inning run-rule loss to the Cardinals earlier in the tournament.
FRESHMAN PHENOM
Freshman
Becky Malchow picked up right where her sister, Abbie, left off her incredible Sycamore career as one of ISU's top hitters through 14 games in 2017. Malchow currently sits second on the team with a .370 batting average and leads ISU with 17 hits this season. She paced the Sycamores at Louisville last weekend, batting .438, slugging .500 and knocking in four RBI on seven hits and one double.
WELCOME TO TERRE HAUTE
Indiana State has four brand-new transfers on its roster in 2017, and there has been little to no adjustment time for these new Sycamores to get acclimated and start producing. Two junior college transfers -- NJCAA All-Americans
Gabi Carter (INF) and
Kenzie Ihle (P) -- have produced very well so far, with Carter leading ISU in doubles (3) and Ihle leading the way as Indiana State's top starter (6-3 in 12 appearances and eight starts). Two Big Ten transfers have joined as well with catcher
Brooke Mann (Wisconsin) and pitcher
Kylie Stober (Minnesota). Mann leads ISU with three home runs and a .564 slugging percentage, while Stober has thrown 32.1 innings in nine appearances.
BREAK OUT THE BATS
Indiana State had an offensive explosion two weeks ago at the WKU Hilltopper Spring Fling, scoring 36 runs on 42 hits in four games -- one of which was a five-inning shutout loss to Western Kentucky. At WKU, the Sycamores slugged .552 as a team and belted out four total homers (including two grand slams). Leading the way were sophomore
Brooke Mann (5-10, 2 HR, 9 RBI, 1.100 slugging) and sophomore
Gabi Carter (5-13, 3 2B, 1 GS, 7 RBI, .846 slugging).
SENIOR LEADERSHIP
The Sycamores return seven to the 2017 season, including five seniors. Combined, those seven Sycamores ran a 2016 line of 304 games played, 269 games started, an average batting average of .337, 210 hits, 25 doubles, five triples, six home runs and 94 RBI.
