NORMAL, Ill. – Indiana State women's basketball snapped a four-game losing streak Friday night after trouncing Illinois State, 65-47, at Redbird Arena behind a career night from
Wendi Bibbins.
Bibbins came to play from start to finish, going for a career-high 23 points and 13 rebounds on her way to her third double-double of the season. The Sycamores (11-10, 5-5 MVC) were also helped in the paint by senior
Rhagen Smith who also scored in double-figures with 13 points on 5-of-7 shooting to go along with four rebounds.
Tierra Webb added eight points and
Ashley Taia tallied six points in the win.
Bibbins and the Sycamores could not have imagined a better first half of basketball. The Harvey, Louisiana native nearly recorded her third double-double of the season in only 18 minutes of action with 15 points and nine rebounds. The junior sparked the Sycamore offense, scoring 11 of the team's first 19 first quarter points.
The Sycamores finished the final two minutes of the first quarter on an 8-0 run to outscore ILS 19-8 in the period. Illinois State (5-16, 2-8 MVC) jumped out on a 6-0 run to open the second quarter to close the gap to five points, but the Sycamores were able to get things going and eventually head to the locker room with a 33-22 lead.
The battle of the glass was all Indiana State in the first 20 minutes with the Sycamores outrebounding the Redbirds 24-15, including six rebounds on the offensive end. The Sycamores dominated the pain in the opening half by a large margin at 24-10.
The Sycamore offense continued to click in the second half, going off for 23 points and holding Illinois State to just 10 points in the third quarter. The Sycamores extended their lead to 25 points with eight minutes left in the fourth quarter and the rest was academic.
In total, Indiana State outrebounded the Redbirds 47-31 and outscored ILS 42-24 in the paint.
Indiana State returns to action Sunday afternoon at Bradley. Tipoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. ET from Renaissance Center in Peoria. The game will also air live on The Valley On ESPN3 and fans can listen to the action in the Wabash Valley on WIBQ 1230 AM with Luke Martin on the call.
