SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Missouri State completed the season sweep of Indiana State Friday night in Springfield, defeating the Sycamores 73-63 at JQH Arena. The Sycamores were led by junior
Ashley Taia who scored 18 points and grabbed five rebounds.
Sophomore
Tierra Webb added 11 points on 4-of-8 shooting and three assists while
Wendi Bibbins scored seven and pulled down five boards. Amarillo, Texas native
Brooklyn Artis scored six points on a pair of 3-pointers in the first half.
It was a back-and-forth contest for much of the half as ISU trailed by just two after the first 10 minutes of action, 17-15. Both teams battled until the three-minute mark when MSU went on a 9-1 run to close out the period and take a 35-26 lead into the locker room.
Indiana State battled back in the third, outscoring MSU 19-15 behind five points from Taia and four points from Wentland.
Wentland went on to make it a three-point game at 61-58 with 2:32 left in the fourth with a turnaround jumper before Danielle Gitzen scored 10 of MSU's final points at the free-throw line.
Indiana State lost the rebounding battle 39-35. The Lady Bears grabbed 12 offensive boards and turned them into 12 points. Another area that MSU was able to capitalize on was turnovers as 20 of the Lady Bears points came off of 17 Sycamore miscues.
Missouri State was led by Liza Fruendt (21) and Danielle Gitzen (20). Gitzen connected on 13-of-14 free throws in the game and added seven rebounds.
Indiana State will return to action Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m. when the Sycamores take on Wichita State.
