Sycamores Fall to Shockers in Wichita, 67-43

WICHITA, Kan. – Indiana State dropped its fourth game in-a-row Sunday afternoon in Wichita, falling to the Shockers 67-43 inside Koch Arena. The Sycamores fell to 12-15 overall and 6-10 in Missouri Valley Action.

Junior Wendi Bibbins led the way for ISU with 12 points and 10 rebounds for her fourth double-double of the year. Rhagen Smith added nine for the Sycamores.

Wichita State (14-14, 9-7 MVC) jumped out to an early 13-8 lead midway through the first thanks in part to six points from Rangie Bessard. The Shockers continued to attack the paint and Bessard was the main contributor in the first. The Sycamores trailed WSU 23-8 after the home squad ended the quarter on a 15-2 run, including a buzzer beating 3-pointer from Jeliah Preston.

Indiana State shot just 20 percent (4-of-20) in the first compared to 57 percent (8-of-14) from the Shockers.

McKenzy Telfair connected on the team's first triple to break the WSU run three-minutes into the second. Bibbins added to the run with a tough turnaround jumper to cut the lead to single-digits.

That was when the Keke Thompson and Bessard combined to go for a 7-0 run on their own to push the Shocker lead to its biggest margin at 30-13. The Sycamores again answered the run of Wichita State with a triple, this time from sophomore Regan Wentland.

Indiana State made it a game though late in the second with an 8-0 run and tough defense to close the gap thanks in part to a couple post scores from Smith as well as free throws from Brooklyn Artis. The Sycamores went into the locker room trailing 38-27.

Bibbins and Smith each tallied six points to lead the Trees in the first half of play. Tierra Webb added four points to go along with two rebounds and a pair of assists.

As a team Indiana State grabbed eight offensive rebounds in the half and turned those into 12 second chance opportunities and capitalized at the charity stripe shooting 5-of-6 from the line.

Wichita State came out on fire, scoring the first seven points of the third and kept piling in on. In the quarter WSU outscored Indiana State 20-11 for a 58-38 lead. The rest was academic.

For the game, ISU shot just 24 percent (15-of-61) while the Shockers went for 39 percent (24-of-61) including five 3-pointers.

Two Shockers went for double-digits led by Bessard who finished with 17 points. Angie Tomkins finished with a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds.

The Sycamores will close out the regular season at home Thursday and Saturday with Southern Illinois and Evansville. Tip with SIU is slated for 7 p.m. ET Thursday while Senior Day with the Purple Aces will begin at 2 p.m. ET at the Hulman Center.
