TERRE HAUTE, Ind. --Â On Senior Night, it was the four person senior class which led Indiana State to a 69-59 victory over Northern Iowa in the home finale inside Hulman Center in front of 3,778 fans.
Indiana State improved to 11-18, 5-12 MVC while UNI fell to 14-14, 9-8 MVC. The Sycamores won for the second consecutive time at home against the Panthers while seventh-year head coachÂ
Greg Lansing earned career victory No. 120 which is tied for the fifth-most in the history of the program with John Longfellow. Indiana State also improved to 80-9 under coach Lansing when holding a team to 63 points or less.
It was the seniors who powered the Sycamores to victory as all four earned the start.Â
Niels Bunschoten connected on 4-of-5 3-pointers and led the way with 20 points to go with three assists and two rebounds.Â
Everett Clemons once again did it all with 12 points and came down with 13 rebounds and added two assists with two steals. It was Clemons' third double-double of the season and the fourth of his career.Â
Matt Van Scyoc hit a pair of 3-pointers to score six points whileÂ
TJ Bell added two points and five rebounds.
Brenton Scott chipped in with a pair of 3-pointers and 14 points. He now has 204 career 3-pointers which ranks third all-time and has scored 1,283 career points which is still 15th-best on the Indiana State career charts.
The Sycamores owned a 31-29 edge in rebounding while UNI held a 9-4 advantage in second chance points. Indiana State blazed the nets to a 51 percent clip, hitting 25-of-49 shots from the field. Of more importance, the Sycamores hit 61.1 percent of their attempts from 3-point range (11-of-18) and 80 percent of their free throws. UNI had trouble getting going offensively as they hit just 7-of-27 shots in the first half (25.9 percent) and were limited to 21-of-54 shooting for the game (38.9 percent).
Indiana State scored the game's first seven points, including a 3-pointer from Van Scyoc as well as a jumper off the hands of Bunschoten staked the Sycamores to a 7-0 advantage. Bunschoten then drained a 3-pointer with 14:15 on the clock to stretch the lead out to 14-4. Klint Carlson drove in for a lay-up to draw within nine points at 23-14, but the Sycamores scored on consecutive trips by Scott,
Laquarious Paige and Scott again for the 29-14 lead with 4;26 remaining in the first half.
The lead spiked on a 3-pointer by Clemons with 1:19 to go for a 35-19 but Luke McDonnell's free throw with 49 seconds remaining in the first half sent the two teams into the locker room with the Sycamores leading 35-20. Bunschoten led at the break with 10 points.
Northern Iowa got a 3-pointer from Preseason Missouri Valley Conference Player Of The Year Jeremy Morgan on their second possession after the half to get within 35-23. Paige countered with a jumper but Jordan Ashton answered with a 3-pointer and the Sycamore lead was down to 37-26. After a pair of Scott free throws pushed Indiana State ahead 46-33 with 14:47 on the clock, four points in a row from the Panthers got the lead down to single digits.Â
Holding to a nine-point lead, the Sycamores scored seven in a row started by a triple from Scott and ended by aÂ
TJ Bell jumper with 10:22 remaining for the 55-39 advantage. Two free throws from Spencer Haldeman with 59 seconds left again briefly drew the Indiana State edge down to single digits but Bunschoten and Clemons hit free throws down the stretch as the Sycamores earned the Senior Night victory by the count of 69-59.
Bennett Koch led the way for Northern Iowa with 16 points.
