Old Dominion Uses Second Half Run To Down Sycamores

CHARLESTON, S.C. -- The Sycamores fell to Old Dominion by the score of 62-44 on the second day of the Gildan Charleston Classic.

Indiana State falls to 1-2 on the season while Old Dominion improved to 3-1.

The Sycamores were limited to 17-of-57 shooting in the game for 29.8 percent mark but also held ODU to 20-of-58 from the field for 34.5 percent. Indiana State was guilty of 17 turnovers which turned into 16 points while Old Dominion limited their miscues to just six and the Sycamores were able to post only two points off them.

Freshman Tyreke Key led the way with 10 points for the Sycamores while Brandon Murphy was solid in his return as he tallied nine points and eight rebounds. Qiydar Davis had seven points and five rebounds.

Davis scored the first five points for the Sycamores as he converted a driving lay-up for an early 5-4 lead. Brandon Murphy who battled back from an eye injury suffered on Thursday against Auburn scored inside to tie the game at 10 with 11:29 remaining. ODU answered with consecutive 3-pointers near the 10 minute mark of the first half to take a six-point advantage but Key hit a pair of charity tosses and then a driving lay-up at the 9:39 mark to get within 18-14.

Murphy ended a two and a half minute scoring drought for the Sycamores with a jumper in the paint at the 7:08 mark to get within 21-16. After ODU re-establish a seven-point cushion, Devin Thomas muscled inside for a conventional 3-point play with just under six minutes on the clock to make it 23-19. Five in a row from the Monarchs was answered with a long jumper from Barnes with 3:33 to go which inched the Sycamores closer at 28-21. A 3-pointer from Key as the clock ticked under three minutes to go drew the Sycamores within four at 28-24. ODU finished the half on a 5-1 spurt and took a 33-25 advantage into the locker room. Freshman Tyreke Key led the way with 7 points.

Devin Thomas scored first for the Sycamores with a long range bomb to get the Sycamores within 33-28. A 10-0 run by Old Dominion ended on a lay-up by Emondre Rickman with 13:02 on the clock but the Sycamores found themselves down 45-32. The Sycamores would get as close as 16 points down the stretch three times down the stretch on lay-ups from Barnes, Murphy as well as Davis who scored with just over three minutes to go to make it 60-44.

Leading the way for Old Dominion was Ahmad Caver with 22 points.

Indiana State will wrap up play at the Gildan Charleston Classic on Sunday, November 19 when they take on either Dayton or Ohio at 1 pm live on WatchESPN.
