Gildan Charleston Classic Opener Goes To Auburn

CHARLESTON, S.C. -- The Sycamores gave up a late first half run to Auburn and could not recover as the Tigers downed Indiana State 83-64 in the opener of the Gildan Charleston Classic.

Indiana State falls to 1-1 on the season while Auburn improves to 2-0. The Sycamores were vying for the second consecutive win over a Power 5 school for the first time since back-to-back wins against Ole Miss and Miami (Fla.) during the 2012 Diamondhead Classic.

Jordan Barnes led the Sycamores in scoring with 19 points as he went 4-of-6 from 3-point range while battling foul trouble but also seeing 29 minutes of action. Qiydar Davis reached double figures scoring for the second consecutive game as he posted 11 points and added five rebounds. Emondre Rickman saw extended minutes in the game following an early first half injury to Brandon Murphy and pulled down 11 rebounds in the process while adding seven points. Tyreke Key sparked an early second half run as he added 11 points off the bench.

The Sycamores hit 17-of-56 shots from the field (30.4 percent), including six 3-pointers, four of which came from Barnes. The Tigers held a 45-37 edge on the glass, with Rickman leading the way for Indiana State. Indiana State was plagued by 21 turnovers which results in 25 points for Auburn off those miscues.

Brandon Murphy got the Sycamores going with a dunk at the 19:10 mark of the first half which answered an early Auburn basket. Qiydar Davis added a pair of free throws on the next possession to stake Indiana State to a one point advantage but the Tigers countered with eight points in a row to race to an early 11-4 lead at the first media timeout. The run was eventually 10 in a row before Jordan Barnes stroked a 3-pointer from the top of the key with 12:59 on the clock to draw within 13-7. Barnes' second 3-pointer of the game came at the 11:11 mark which got the Sycamores within 19-14. After five in a row from Auburn, Barnes connected on his third 3-pointer of the game which made it a six-point deficit as the clock went under the 10 minute mark.

Barnes continued his strong scoring effort in the first half with a lay-up at the 6:36 mark to draw within 13 points at 36-23 but a 10-0 run by the Tigers stretched their lead out to 46-23 before Davis buried a pair of charity tosses with 2:25 to go. The two teams traded dunks in the final minute of the first half with the Sycamores trailing 48-27. Barnes led all scorers in the first 20 minutes with 13 points.

Emondre Rickman started off the second half with a wide-open lay-up just 15 seconds in to trim the Auburn advantage down to 48-29. Tyreke Key had a fast break lay-up at the 17:41 mark to stop an Auburn run and draw the Sycamores within 23 points. Tyreke Key posted a pair of fast break lay-ups around the 15 minute mark to get back to within 56-38. Barnes' fourth 3-pointer of the game cut the Auburn lead down to 59-41 with just under 14 minutes to go. Davis reached the eight point mark with a lay-up at the 9:30 mark off the nice feed from Rickman in the paint. Davis added a 3-pointer in the corner with 8:20 remaining to draw within 73-49.

Demonte Ojinnaka tallied a late 3-pointer and a conventional 3-point play by Key with 1:36 remaining cut the Auburn lead down to 82-62.

Auburn was led by 15 points from Bryce Brown.

Indiana State continues play in the Gildan Charleston Classic tomorrow (Nov. 17) against Old Dominion. The game will begin at 1:30 pm (ET) and will air live on ESPNU as well as the WatchESPN app.
