WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Indiana State and Purdue teamed up for a greater cause on Saturday in front of an enthusiastic crowd inside Mackey Arena as they played an exhibition contest to aid in hurricane relief in Texas, Florida and Puerto Rico. Purdue took a 94-72 victory in the game.
All net proceeds from the exhibition will benefit the Greater Houston Community Foundation and the UNIDOS Disaster Relief & Recovery Program to support Puerto Rico.
The entire Sycamore staff wore purple shirts during the game in honor of Darrell Ragland, father of former Sycamore assistant coach David Ragland, who passed away earlier this week after a lengthy battle with pancreatic cancer.
Jordan Barnes led the way for the Sycamores with 15 points while
Brenton Scott added 12 of his own. Tyreke Key added eight points and led the way with seven rebounds.
The Sycamores hit 28-of-69 shots from the field to finish with a 41 percent shooting percentage. Purdue owned a 41-35 edge in the rebounding battle.
Jordan Barnes put the ball through the hoop first for the Sycamores to cut into an early deficit as he drained a 3-pointer as ISU trailed 4-3 after a pair of early Isaac Haas jumpers. The Sycamores trailed 26-14 as the clock ticked towards the nine minute mark before Barnes hit his third 3-pointer of the first half and followed with a driving layup to cut the Boilermaker lead down to 26-19 with 8:59 to go. The Sycamores gave up a jumper but scored the next six points on a run capped by a put back from
Qiydar Davis to get within 28-25 with 6:50 to go. Purdue responded to the Sycamore run with eight of the game's next 10 points and held a 36-27 lead with just under five minutes to go in the half.
The Purdue lead ballooned back up to 11 points at 38-27 before
Tyreke Key drove into the lane and hit a lay-up plus the foul with 3:32 to go before halftime which got the Sycamores within 38-29. Key converted the charity toss to cut the deficit down to just eight points. After a pair of missed free throws for the Boilers,
Brandon Murphy scored inside the Purdue lead was down to 38-32 as the clock went under the three minute mark. ISU then traded one made free throw for a
Devin Thomas lay-up to get within 39-34. Murphy scored inside again with just over one minute left to cut the Boiler lead down to 41-36. Indiana State was able to take advantage of a pair of missed Purdue free throws in the final seconds, but when fouled Barnes hit his to send the Sycamores into the locker room trailing just 41-38.
Barnes led the Sycamores with 13 first half points while Tyreke Key and Qiydar Davis led the way with four rebounds.
Brenton Scott answered an early second half score for Purdue and then Murphy poured in a wide open dunk just over two minutes into the second half as the Boilers led 45-42. Purdue answered with game's next 12 points to extend their cushion out to 57-42 before Indiana State's
Qiydar Davis hit a free throw with 14:55 on the clock to trim the edge down to 57-43. The next field goal came from
Devin Thomas as the clock ticked towards the 14 minute mark but with Purdue owning a 17-point lead.
Brenton Scott hit his first 3-pointer of the game at the 13:22 mark to get the Trees with 12 points.
Scott connected on his second trifecta of the second half with 9:52 remaining but Purdue maintained a 69-55 lead. Key continued a strong second half for the young freshman as he bounced home a jumper as the clock ticked towards the six minute mark to get the Sycamores within 76-60.
Daniel Huenermann tallied a bucket with just over three minutes remaining to make it 82-64 in favor of the Boilers.
Clayton Hughes got on the scoreboard with a triple as the clock went under the two minute mark for his first bucket of the contest. Huenermann tacked on a 3-pointer and Hughes hit a floater in the lane in the final moments but it was Purdue that earned the 94-72 victory.
Purdue was led by 16 points from Carsen Edwards and Dakota Mathias.
Indiana State continues with its second preseason exhibition contest when they open the home slate on Friday, November 3 inside Hulman Center against Marian (Ind.). The game begins at 7 pm (ET) and will be televised live world-wide on The Valley On ESPN3.
