TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- In the Sycamores final preseason tuneup, Indiana State downed visiting Marian 84-64 in front of 3,247 fans inside Hulman Center.
The Sycamores were led in scoring off the bench by freshman
Tyreke Key who hit 6-of-9 shots from the field, including his lone 3-point attempt to finish with 14 points. Just off the pace was
Brenton Scott who hit 2-of-4 from long range and 5-of-9 overall for 13 points while
Jordan Barnes added 11 as did freshman
Clayton Hughes. The Sycamores owned a 47-32 edge on the glass, led by eight each from Scott and freshman
Daniel Huenermann.
Brandon Murphy hit 8-of-10 free throw attempts.
Indiana State blazed the nets for a 47.4 percent mark in the first half and finished 31-of-70 for a 44.3 percent mark. The Sycamores connected on eight trifectas while Marian was 12-of-29 (41.4 percent) from distance.
Murphy scored the first two points of the game with a pair of free throws from Murphy just over one minute into the game. The game went back and forth until Barnes converted a lay-up after a steal from Scott and then added dunk by Key off a pin point pass from Barnes. Sterling Brown countered with a 3-pointer as Marian was within 10-9 just under five minutes into the opening half. Leading 13-11, the Sycamores got a 3-pointer from
Brenton Scott to stretch the lead out to five. An Andrew Jordan free throw with 13:31 left before halftime got the Knights within 16-12, but the Sycamores rattled off 13 in a row beginning with dunk from
Bronson Kessinger and also included a 3-pointer by Barnes. The run was capped by a putback from
Qiydar Davis with 7:28 on the clock and the lead stood at 29-12.
The Sycamroe defense did not allow a point for nearly seven minutes until Brown converted a lay-up with 6:55 to go to draw within 29-14. The lead would swell to as high as 21 points in the first half including a long 3-pointer from Barnes at the halftime buzzer for the 48-27 cushion. Barnes led the way with 10 points in the opening 20 minutes.
It would become a 7-0 run wrapped around the break after Scott and Davis scored on the first two possessions as the Sycamores led 52-27. Marian would score four in a row to get within 21 points before the Sycamores took their first timeout of the game. A 3-pointer from Marian's Christian Stewart drew the Knights deficit under 20 points but Key and Rickman scored on consecutive possessions to start a 12-0 run which was capped by a dunk from Hughes off the feed by Barnes for a 67-36 lead. The 31 point advantage was the high water mark for the Sycamores in the game.
Walkon freshman Tyeshon Martin got into the action late and hit a free throw with 1:37 to go which stretched the lead out to 81-58.
Ethan Claycomb also got into the action with a putback lay-up with 5:29 to go to score for the first time inside Hulman Center. KC Earls and Curtis Green connected on 3-pointers in the final minute as the Sycamores walked out with an 84-64 victory.
Leading the way for the Knights was Wes Stowers who scored 15 points. Stowers is the younger brother of Alex Stowers, who was a defensive back in recent seasons for the Indiana State football team.
Indiana State opens the regular season on Friday, November 10 when they travel to Bloomington, Ind., for a battle with Indiana. Tip-off is set for 7:00 pm (ET) and will be televised live on Big Ten Network Plus.
