DES MOINES, Iowa -- A run by the home standing Drake Bulldogs around both ends of halftime gave the Bulldogs the edge they needed to post an 87-70 victory over visiting Indiana State inside the Drake Knapp Center.
The Sycamores fell to 6-11, 0-5 MVC while Drake improved to 5-12, 3-2 MVC. It snapped a three-game winning streak for the Sycamores over the Bulldogs.
Everett Clemons tallied his second double-double of the season from the point guard position with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Brenton Scott made it a perfect 17-of-17 of reaching double figures scoring as he tallied 12.
Jordan Barnes reached double figures scoring for the second consecutive game as he posted 10 points.
On the first possession of the game,
Everett Clemons connected on a pair of free throws as the Sycamores to a quick 2-0 lead. The two teams went back-and-forth over the course of the next few possessions as the Sycamores answered each time the Bulldogs were able to find the bottom of the net. After Drake hit their first 3-pointer of the game, Laqaurious Paige connected on the Sycamores' first to knot the game at 11 with 15:45 on the clock. Drake then held ISU scoreless for the next four minutes en route to putting together a 10-0 run and taking a 21-11 advantage.
Bronson Kessinger ended the dry spell at the 11:33 mark with a putback to get within 21-13. After Drake scored from long range,
Trey Knight III answered with his second career 3-pointer with 11;02 on the clock to get within 24-16.
After a pair of free throws pushed the Bulldogs ahead by 10 points, the Sycamores got hot. Scott and
Niels Bunschoten went back-to-back with 3-pointers to trim the Drake lead down to just four points and then Bunschoten connected on a lay-up in transition to complete an 8-0 run and ISU found themselves within 26-24. Drake got a Graham Woodward jumper to extend their lead back out to four points, but Scott answered with his second 3-pointer of the first stanza and ISU made it 11 of the last 13 points to get within 28-27 at the 7:28 mark. Bunschoten made it a 14-2 spurt as he hit his second 3-pointer of the first 20 minutes to stake the Sycamores to a 30-28 advantage.
Drake countered with nine points in a row to take a 37-30 lead before Clemons reentered the game and immediately hit a floater which turned into a conventional 3-point play with 1:08 on the clock to get within four points. But Drake answered with the final five points as the Bulldogs took a 42-33 lead into the half. Bunschoten led the way for the Sycamores in the first half with eight points while Clemons added seven.
Heading into the second half, Drake owned a 42-33 advantage thanks to a late 5-0 Bulldog run. They added to the lead by scoring the first four of the second half to post a 47-33 advantage. Paige stopped the bleed with a pair of free throws at the 18:41 mark to get within 47-35. Barnes hit a free throw with 14:45 on the clock to cut the Drake lead down to 53-38.
Matt Van Scyoc hit a driving lay-up at the 12:09 mark to trim the Bulldog advantage down to 59-42. Barnes hit a 3-pointer with 8:31 remaining as part of a 6-0 run which trimmed the Bulldogs edge to 73-54.
Matt Van Scyoc converted a 3-pointer and then Barnes tallied a second-chance lay-up with 6:15 remaining to get within 75-59.
Ore Arogundade led Drake with 15 points.
Indiana State begins a two-game home stand on Saturday, January 14 when they host Bradley at 1 p.m. (ET) inside Hulman Center.
