RALEIGH, N.C. -- Indiana State Baseball (11-6, 0-0 MVC) was looking for redemption in this afternoon's match-up against No.13 N.C. State (14-5, 1-2 ACC) and that is just what they earned. After a loss to the Wolfpack on Tuesday night, the Sycamores would not look back, securing an 11-7 win over No.13 N.C. State in game two, outhitting the Wolfpack 16 to 10. This win marks the second over a ranked opponent since the 2-0 victory over Oklahoma State.
The Sycamores took an early lead and ran with it. It all started when freshman Clay Dungan singled in the top of the second inning and then freshman Chris Ayers reached first on four straight balls. Sophomore Tyler Friis loaded the bases with a bunt single just before sophomore Dane Giesler doubled to score Dungan and Ayers to go up 2-1.
Indiana State struck again in the third inning as senior Andy Young started the inning with his second double of the game. Behind Young, junior Hunter Owen, who is currently on a seven game hitting streak, singled to put Young on third. Senior Kaden Moore then hit a chopper in the infield to score Young, putting the Sycamores up 3-0.
The Wolfpack would cut into the Sycamore lead, scoring two in the bottom of the third, but the one run deficit would not last long as the Sycamores would then score six runs in the top of the fourth while batting around the lineup. Owen picked up two RBIs scoring Giesler and junior Tony Rosselli, and then Young scored on a failed pickoff attempt from the Wolfpack catcher.
Dungan followed with his second hit of the game, a double, to plate two more, sending the Sycamore lead to 9-2. N.C. State answered again, scoring two in the bottom of the fourth and one more in the bottom of the fifth.
The Sycamores would not stop at nine, as Hunter Owen would single again to score Young in the top of the seventh inning, putting them up 10-5, but the Wolfpack answered again adding two more.
Indiana State would hold on to win 11-7. Dungan lead the Sycamores going 4-for-5 at the plate with two RBIs, while Owen finished 3-for-6 with three RBIs and Young went 2-for-4 with three RBIs.
The Sycamores return to action for their home opening double header against Siena at Bob Warn Field on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. ET. Follow the Sycamores on Twitter and Facebook for more updates on everything Sycamore Baseball.
