ORLANDO, Fla. -- Indiana State battled with Stanford to the final buzzer, but the Cardinal used a late 3-pointer to escape with a narrow 65-62 victory over the Sycamores on the second day of the Advocare Invitational, which is being held at the HP Fieldhouse on the campus of the ESPN Wide World Of Sports at Walt Disney World Resort.
The Sycamores fell to 2-3 on the season while Stanford improved to 5-1. Indiana State was looking for their first victory over a member of the PAC 12 conference since a 1946 victory over Oregon.
Scott led the way for the Sycamores with 13 points as he hit a trio of 3-pointers in the contest, including one in the final seconds to tie the game. He also added a team-high seven rebounds. Everett Clemons added 12 points and tallied five rebounds as well as five assists.
The Sycamores hit 25-of-66 shots (37.9 percent), including seven 3-pointers. The defense limited Stanford to 19-of-52 from the field (36.5 percent) but were able to win the rebounding battle by a 47-31 margin.
Trailing 47-46, the Sycamores got consecutive field goals from Donovan Franklin and freshman Jordan Barnes as Indiana State surged ahead 50-47 with 8:05 remaining. Six in a row from the Cardinal was answered by a lay-up inside from TJ Bell and a huge 3-pointer in transition from Scott with 4:30 left which pushed the Sycamores back ahead 55-53.
The lead changed hands both ways around the two minute mark as Bell converted inside and then Stanford scored four points in a row to lead 60-57 with just over a minute remaining. Everett Clemons forced a Stanford turnover and then Barnes hit a baseline lay-up with 25 seconds remaining to draw the Sycamores within 60-59.
Stanford would go on to take a 62-59 lead until Scott hit another big 3-pointer with six seconds left which knotted the game at 62. Dorian Pickens answered though with a trey of his own to push the Cardinal ahead 65-62 with two seconds remaining. The Sycamores had to go the length of the floor but were not able to get a shot off before the buzzer sounded.
Stanford scored the first four points of the game, but Laquarious Paige hit jumpers on the next two possessions to level the score at 4. Back-to-back 3-pointers from Donovan Franklin and Niels Bunschoten staked the Sycamores to a 10-7 advantage with 14:50 on the clock. A sweet baseline move from TJ Bell pushed the Sycamores ahead 12-10 just ahead of the second media timeout.
Scott shook off some early misses as he drained a 3-pointer with 8:36 on the clock to knot the score at 17. Stanford would use a 3-pointer of their own as the clock ticked under the four minute mark to take a 30-24 lead and forced the Sycamores to burn a timeout. It would be the Cardinal's final field goal of the half as Jordan Barnes kick started a 7-0 Sycamore run with a 3-pointer and was followed by buckets from Clemons and Scott as ISU surged ahead 31-30. A pair of Dorian Pickens free throws with four seconds remaining staked the Cardinal to a 32-31 halftime lead. Scott led the way at the break with seven points while Paige owned six.
Stanford took the lead early in the second half at 42-35 before the Sycamores went to Clemons twice moving towards the basket on consecutive possessions and then Bunschoten drilled a 3-pointer in the corner to knot the score at 42 with 13:37 remaining. After Stanford briefly took a lead Clemons hit a pair of charity tosses at the 12:04 mark to knot the score at 44. Kessinger made it 11 of 13 points scored for the Sycamores when he hit two free throws with 11:08 remaining to take a 46-44 lead.
Pickens and Reid Travis each led the way for Stanford with 19 points.
Indiana State wraps up play in the Advocare Invitational against either Quinnipiac or Seton Hall on Sunday, November 27 at 11:00 a.m. (ET). The game will be televised live nationally on ESPNU as well as world-wide on the Watch ESPN app.
