Everett Clemons & Brenton Scott Combine To Lead ISU To Victory At Ball State

MUNCIE, Ind. -- For the second time in as many games to start the season, the Sycamores went to overtime and this time they came away with a thrilling 80-74 overtime victory over Ball State inside Worthen Arena.

The Sycamores improved to 1-1 on the season while Ball State fell to 1-1. It was just the second ever victory for ISU inside Worthen Arena and was the fifth win in the last six against the Cardinals.

Brenton Scott led the way with 25 points while Everett Clemons narrowly missed a triple-double with 11 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists. Matt Van Scyoc added 14 points in the victory.

Ball State scored first in overtime, but Laquarious Paige hit a reverse lay-up with just over four minutes to tie the game at 66 and after a stop, Clemons earned the double-double with a lay-up to take a 68-66 advantage. Clemons hit a free throw with 2:49 on the clock and ISU led 69-66. Ball State got it back within a point, but Scott hit a pair of charity tosses with just over two minutes remaining to go over 20 points for the second time in as many games.

Then after a big defensive rebound by Murphy, Van Scyoc hit a 3-pointer which bounced high above the rim and in as ISU led 74-68 with 1:32 remaining. Scott answered a Ball State basket with another one that hit every side of the rim to push ahead 76-70 with 42 seconds left. Scott made its 25 points with a pair of free throws and then Barnes converted a pair with 7.3 seconds left for the 80-74 advantage.

A whirling shot from Brenton Scott with 1:25 remaining that bounced home helped ISU regain a 61-60 lead after six points in a row from the Cardinals put them ahead by a point. But Tayler Persons hit a jumper with 29.2 seconds remaining to push Ball State ahead 62-61 and a back-and-forth contest. But with 15.1 seconds left Brandon Murphy hit a big shot under the basket and was fouled to stake the Sycamores to a 63-62 lead.

After BSU called their final timeout, Murphy hit the ensuing charity toss as the lead grew to 64-62. But Persons hit a pair of free throws with seven seconds left to tie the game at 64 and send the Sycamores to their second overtime in as many games.

Leading by one at the half, Ball State scored first after the break, but Van Scyoc answered with a 3-pointer to put him into double figures scoring and the Sycamores led 36-34. Up one point, Scott hit a corner 3-pointer with 16:53 remaining to stretch the lead out to 40-36 which forced Ball State to call a timeout. After the stoppage, the Sycamores made it six points in a row off a Scott floater after the Clemons rebound for a 42-36 edge.

After a media timeout, Scott grabbed a steal and fast break lay-up to make it an 8-0 run (the last seven of which were scored by Scott) and ISU led 44-36 with just over 15 minutes remaining. Ball State would not surrender as they scored five points in a row as the Sycamores went cold on the offensive end to trim the advantage down to 44-41. Niels Bunschoten stopped the dry spell at the 11:37 mark with a free throw to restore a 45-41 lead.

Jordan Barnes hit a pair of free throws with 10:45 remaining after a Ball State 3-pointer and led by three points. Barnes continued his offensive damage with a 3-pointer on the next possession and Scott continued the run with a floater that rattled home to regain a 52-44 edge and force Ball State to call timeout with 9:24 on the clock.

The Cardinals would not go away as they drew the margin to four points before Scott hit a free throw at the 7:08 mark for a 55-50 lead. Once again a one point game, Bunschoten drained a long jumper to push ahead 57-54 as the clock ticked towards the five minute mark. After a pair of stops, Bunschoten used an up-and-under-move to stretch the edge out to 59-54. 

Indiana State scored on each of its first two possessions out of the gate as Matt Van Sycoc drilled a corner 3-pointer and then Brenton Scott took the ball to the rim for a driving lay-up and a quick 5-0 lead. Donovan Franklin scored his first points as a Sycamore and ISU led 10-4 at the first media timeout. After BSU tied it up at 10, Van Scyoc converted three charity tosses as the Sycamores regained the lead.

With Ball State leading by one point, Clemons grabbed a defensive rebound in traffic and went the length of the court for a driving lay-up which staked the Sycamores to a 20-19 lead at the 5:07 mark. The Cardinals responded with four in a row before Van Scyoc hit a driving layup and then after a steal, Laquarious Paige converted a fast break bucket and ISU led 24-23. Clemons extended the lead as he drove to the basket with 2:44 remaining and Scott answered a pair of free throws with a long jumper to restore the 28-25 advantage.

Donovan Franklin would go on to get a steal and conventional 3-point play as the clock neared the one minute mark to put ISU ahead 31-28 before Bronson Kessinger found the bottom of the basket for the first time in his Sycamore career with 18 seconds left before BSU answered with a field goal at the buzzer and ISU led 33-32 at the half. Van Scyoc led the way with eight points at the half while Everett Clemons tallied six points and pulled down six rebounds.

Indiana State returns to action as they open the home portion of their schedule on Saturday, November 19 against Missouri-St. Louis. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. (ET) inside Hulman Center.
