TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – The Indiana State baseball team dropped its first midweek game at Bob Warn Field on Tuesday night against the Purdue Boilermakers. ISU was defeated 10-6 and fall to 13-16 on the season, while Purdue improves to 11-21 in 2015.
The Boilermakers scored first in the top of the first frame. Cody Strong was walked and moved to second on a single by Brandon Krieg. Ted Snidanko singled up the middle to bring home Strong and put Purdue up 1-0.
Purdue added two more runs in the second inning. Justin Gubser led off with a double to left field and scored on an Alec Olund double to center. Strong singled to center field to bring around Olund lead 3-0.
The Sycamores got on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning. Derek Hannahs singled up the middle to lead off the inning. Andy Young followed with a triple to right field to bring him around to score. Young scored when Jacob Hayes singled up the middle to cut the lead to 3-2.
Purdue scored a solo run in the top of the fifth inning. Harry Shipley led off the inning after getting hit-by-a-pitch and scored on a wild pitch to extend the lead to 4-2 in favor of the Boilermakers.
The Boilermakers added another run in the top of the sixth inning. Gubser led off with a walk and moved to third on a Kyle Johnson double and scored on a wild pitch. After five and a half innings Purdue led 5-2.
ISU cut into the Boilermaker lead in the bottom of the seventh inning. Friis reached on a fielder's choice and moved to third on a double from Landon Curry. Hannahs then singled up the middle to bring both home. After seven innings, ISU trailed 5-4.
Purdue extended their lead in the top of the eighth inning. The Boilermakers scored five runs on one hit while benefitting from four walks, and three hit batters and went up 10-4 after seven and a half innings.
The Sycamores cut into the Purdue lead in the bottom of the eighth inning. Hayes led off with a single and Rosselli and Andrew Gutierrez worked back-to-back walks to load the bases. Friis delivered the big hit of the inning, a single down the left field line to score Hayes and Rosselli and trim the lead to 10-6.
The first five hitters in the ISU lineup did the bulk of the damage Tuesday night. Hayes finished 3-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored. Friis and Curry finished 2-for-5 with a run scored, Friis added two RBI. Hannahs finished the game 2-for-4 with two RBI and scored one run. Andy Young added a hit, an RBI and scored one run.
On the mound, ISU used six pitchers to finish the game. Trent Lunsford (0-2) started and took the loss. Lunsford went 3.0 innings allowing seven hits, three runs; all earned, walked one and struck out one. Connor Schwienebart made his sixth appearance of the season, going 2.1 innings, allowing two hits, two earned runs, walking one and striking out one. Michael Eberle also worked in relief, going 1.1 innings, giving up one hit, walking one and striking one out.
Ryan Cheek worked 0.2 innings, giving up three runs on no hits and walking one Boilermaker. Austin Conway came in and worked 0.1 innings, giving up one hit and two runs. John Patterson made his second appearance of the season, going 1.1 innings without allowing a hit or a run.
The Sycamores return to action on Wednesday, when they travel to Charleston, Ill. to take on the Eastern Illinois Panthers at Coaches Stadium at 4:00 p.m. (ET).
