TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – The Sycamore baseball team earned a 4-0 victory over the Canisius Golden Griffins on Saturday afternoon at Bob Warn Field at Sycamore Stadium. ISU improves to 6-7 on the year, while Canisius falls to 6-10.
The Sycamores got on the board early, posting three runs in the first inning. Tyler Friis and Derek Hannahs earned back-to-back walks to put runners on first and second for Jacob Hayes who delivered a single to score Friis and move Hannahs to third. Andy Young reached on an error, allowing Hannahs to score. Andy DeJesus plated the third run of the inning on a ground out to second base. Of the three runs, only one was earned.
ISU added another run in the second inning when Hannahs singled back to the pitcher to bring home Andrew Gutierrez. After two innings, the Sycamores led 4-0.
That was all the Sycamores would need to earn the victory. Indiana State's Jeff Degano pitched 7.1 innings, allowing just two hits, one walk and tied a career-high 10 strike outs. It was Degano's fourth consecutive quality start. Austin Conway came on in relief and picked up his fifth scoreless appearance without allowing a hit.
At the plate, Hannahs and Gutierrez delivered multi-hit performances, Hannahs was two-for-three with an RBI and a run scored while Gutierrez was two-for-four with a run scored. Hayes, Young, and DeJesus each added an RBI. Landon Curry, Friis, and Hunter Owen added hits in the contest.
