Indiana State holds Fall Sports Banquet, names team award winners

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Indiana State held its annual Fall Sports Banquet on Thursday evening, during which it honored individuals on the men's and women's cross country, football, soccer and volleyball teams – as well as members of the spirit squads.

Highlighting the evening were eight individuals honored as their team's Most Valuable Player.

For men's cross country, Terre Haute native and all-time Sycamore great John Mascari ran away with the award. Mascari had a historic senior season in 2015, becoming the first-ever four-time winner of both the Indiana Intercollegiate and the Missouri Valley Conference individual title, as well as the first-ever four-time national qualifier in Indiana State history.

His counterpart on the women's side was All-MVC finisher Taylor Austin. The sophomore had a stellar second campaign in leading the Sycamore women, which culminated with a 10th-place finish at the MVC meet and an All-Region 23rd-place finish at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional – the highest Great Lakes finish by a female in the MVC since 2003 (Indiana State's Jessica Crowder, 16th place).

Sophomore quarterback Matt Adam earned the distinction for the Sycamore football team. After winning a training camp battle for the starting job, Adam became the offensive catalyst for the Sycamores as he put up the third-best offensive season in Indiana State history with 2,592 yards of total offense (2,098 passing, 494 rushing) and 25 total touchdowns (19 passing, six rushing). In fact, in the entire Missouri Valley Football Conference, Adam only trailed national leader Mark Iannotti of Southern Illinois in total offense (who had 3,911 total yards).

Two Sycamores earned the MVP honor for the ISU soccer team: senior Sydney Lovelace and junior Brittany San Roman. Lovelace -- who was recently named to both the All-MVC team and the MVC Scholar-Athlete team, as well as the CoSIDA Academic All-District team -- scored the first hat trick in school history this season and also broke ISU's single-game scoring record with seven points vs. Chicago State. San Roman, ISU's goalie, ranked tied for first in the conference in saves with 97 – an average of 5.71 per match.

On the volleyball court, the MVP award went to junior right side/middle blocker Kynedi Nalls – who was also named ISU volleyball's Most Improved Player for the 2015 season. Nalls, a Second-Team All-MVC honoree, led Indiana State with 336 kills (2.62/set) and played in all 128 sets this season. Nalls hit .259 overall (19th MVC) and hit in double-figures in 16 total matches in 2015.

David Enteman (Cheer) and Sabrina Brown (Sparkettes) also earned team MVP awards on Thursday night.
