Box Score TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Senior forwards Chelsea Small and Racheal Mahan each picked up double-doubles as the Indiana State women's basketball team earned its first Missouri Valley Conference win of the season, 64-50, over Bradley on Friday evening. Indiana State improves to 11-3 overall and 1-2 in the MVC.
Small led with 13 points and 11 rebounds, one shy of her career high, as Mahan added 12 points and 10 rebounds in the win. Senior guard Stephanie Wittman also reached double figures with 11 points, two assists and two steals to go along with three boards.
Indiana State collected a season-high 24 offensive rebounds to win the battle on the glass, 42-37. The Sycamores also forced the Braves to commit 28 turnovers as it picked up 13 steals including two apiece from Mahan, Wittman and senior guard Natasha Zurek.
Senior forward Jasmine Grier connected for nine points while junior guard Alexis Newbolt drained two 3-pointers to tally seven points on the night. The duo helped combine with the rest of the Sycamore bench that accounted for 23 points. In all, 12 different players saw at least eight minutes of action in the win.
ISU also distributed the ball well, combining for 17 assists on 23 made shots. Senior forward Travecia Franklin led with four assists to go along with five points and five rebounds. Senior guard Natasha Zurek also chipped in three assists and two steals as ISU won its sixth-straight games over Bradley.
On the evening, Indiana State shot just 35.4 percent from the floor and 29.4 percent from 3-point range. They also struggled from the free throw line, posting its third worst free throw shooting night with a 54.2 percent from the charity stripe.
Jumping out to an early 10-2 lead, ISU allowed the Braves (2-12, 0-3 MVC) to go on a 6-0 run but redshirt junior Cierra Ceazer found Newbolt open at the top of the for the triple. ISU led by as many as 15 in the half and took a 32-19 advantage into the locker room at the break.
They maintained a double-digit lead for the first half of the final frame but Bradley chipped away at their deficit, coming within eight after a 3-pointer by freshman forward Whitney Tinjum. Newbolt picked a good time for her second long range bucket of the night on dish by Franklin to go back up 10 points with 6:38 to play.
But a pesky Bradley team didn't quit, after a pair of free throws got them within ten but ISU closed the game on a 6-2 run for the victory.
Indiana State is back in Hulman Center on Sunday when it hosts Loyola. Tipoff is set for 2:05 p.m. ET.
