BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – It took extra minutes, but the Indiana State women's basketball team was victorious in a 65-61 overtime win at Indiana on Sunday afternoon. Indiana State improves to 5-1 on the season and marks the first win in the in-state series since Dec. 6, 2004.
Senior forward Jasmine Grier came off the bench for 18 points and a team-high three assists along with Racheal Mahan with 14 points and 10 rebounds for her first double-double of the season. Nine different Sycamores posted points on the afternoon, as they shot just 33.8 percent from the floor and 25 percent from beyond the arc.
The victory marked the second-straight season with a win over a Big Ten school as it also posted a win over Northwestern in 2013-14. It also marked the first OT game since Jan. 20, 2011 in a 77-74 win over Drake at Hulman Center.
ISU used 31 bench points in the victory, including eight from sophomore forward Rhagen Smith. Senior forward Chelsea Small added six points and seven rebounds while senior guard Stephanie Wittman chipped in seven points.
Defense kicked in for Indiana State, forcing an IU season-high 22 turnovers and held the nation's second-highest scoring team, who averaged 94.8 points per game, to just 61 points on the night.
The Sycamores overcame a dismal first half, where it went just 25.0 percent from the floor and trailed by as many as 12 within the first 10 minutes of play. ISU chipped away in the final minutes of the half, as it came within four on a senior forward Lashonda Littleton offensive board and put back.
A six point run for the Hoosiers stretched the lead back out to eight with 1:59 left in the half. Senior guard Stephanie Wittman sank a free throw and a bucket with three second left to make it 20-27 at the half.
Down nine in the second half, Grier drained a 3-pointer at the top of the key to cut the deficit down to 48-42. An IU layup and pair of free throws made it a 10-point game before back-to-back buckets by Mahan put the Sycamores within four with 3:34 to play in regulation.
IU kept it within four after hitting a pair of free throws. Grier went to the line to make it a three point game as junior guard Alexis Newbolt drilled a 3-pointer from the left wing to tie the game up and force overtime.
Indiana State held the Hoosiers to just 33.3 percent shooting in the five minute overtime period, while the Sycamores were 50.0 percent from the field and went 75 percent from the line (6-for-8) to help seal the win.
The two teams kept the score knotted through the 2:21 mark in overtime before Grier's third 3-pointer of the game gave Indiana State a 61-58 lead. The Hoosiers had chances late, as it forced a Mahan turnover but freshman guard Tyra Buss' 3-pointer was no good with 47 seconds to play.
ISU nearly gave up the ball game, as Small turned the ball over with 40 seconds left near the IU basket. IU's Karlee McBride drained a three to make it a one point game.
The Sycamores forced another IU turnover with 13 seconds as McBride tried to force herway into the lane. ISU stood tall and forced McBride to travel, and was then forced to foul Small.
Small converted on three of four free throws in the final 10 seconds to help seal the victory.
The Sycamores wrap up a three game road swing on Thursday when it heads to Indianapolis to face IUPUI. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. ET.
