KANSAS CITY – The Kansas City Royals selected Indiana State left-hander pitcher Sean Manaea with the 34th overall selection of the 2013 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft in early June and came to an agreement with the 6-foot-5 southpaw on Friday, June 21, as Manaea chose to forgo his senior season on the mound with the Sycamores to begin his professional career.
Manaea, who did not have another Division I scholarship offer out of Andrean High School in 2010, became the second-highest MLB Draft selection from Indiana State on June 6th. His selection at No. 34 overall trails only Bill Hayes (No. 13, Chicago Cubs, 1978) in program history.
The Kansas City Royals and Manaea agreed to a $3.55 million signing bonus, more than doubling the assigned slot value as defined by Major League Baseball. Manaea's bonus eclipses the record for a supplemental first-rounder previously held by Nick Castellanos, who received $3.45 million from the Tigers in 2010. Manaea's bonus also is the second-largest ever outside of the first round, trailing only the $5 million that the Pirates paid second-rounder Josh Bell in 2011.
The Wanatah, Ind., native set an Indiana State single-season record with a 1.47 ERA in 2013, posting a 5-4 record over 13 starts. Manaea fanned a team-leading 93 batters in 73.1 innings pitched, ranking third in the NCAA with an 11.4 strikeouts per nine innings average. The Sycamore southpaw led the team in strikeouts in all three of his seasons at Indiana State (2011-13), finishing his junior season with 290 career strikeouts, good for third in school history.
Manaea broke onto the national scene during the summer of 2012 when he played with the Hyannis Harbor Hawks of the Cape Cod Baseball League. He earned both the B.F.C. Whitehouse Top Pitcher and the Robert A. McNeese Outstanding Pro Prospect awards from the CCBL, totaling a 5-1 record and a 1.22 ERA with a league-leading 85 strikeouts in 57.1 innings pitched.
