NORMAL, Ill. – The 2013 Indiana State baseball season came to an end on Friday, as the Sycamores were eliminated from the 2013 Missouri Valley Conference Baseball Tournament in Normal, Ill., following a 5-4 loss to the Wichita State Shockers.
Indiana State (26-25) lost in the tournament semifinals for the third time in the last four seasons, as the squads from 2010, 2011 and 2013 also fell as one of the final four teams remaining in the tournament field. Wichita State (38-26) advances to face Illinois State (39-18) for the tournament championship on Saturday night.
The Sycamores and Shockers played scoreless baseball until the sixth inning on Friday, when both team's bats broke out. Indiana State took a two-run lead in the top half of the inning as ISU loaded the bases with no outs in the inning. Redshirt sophomore Connor McClain gave Indiana State the lead on a sacrifice fly to center before senior Jordan Pearson made it 2-0 ISU on a single to right-center.
The Shockers came back to tie the game in the bottom of the frame, using a two-run single by Garrett Bayliff to knot the score at 2-2. Wichita State added three runs with two outs in the inning, coming on a two-run single to center by Micah Green and a one-run single to right by Mikel Mucha.
Indiana State got back within one run in the following inning, as senior Robby Ort lined a solo home run to right field before redshirt sophomore Jacob Hayes grounded a two-out single to left that plated redshirt senior Koby Kraemer from second base.
Junior Tyler Wampler led off the eighth inning by being hit by a pitch and reached third base with one out, but redshirt sophomore Derek Hannahs' line drive was snagged by a leaping Tanner Dearman at second base before Ort popped up to right field.
In the ninth, WSU's Mucha made a spectacular catch in foul territory in left field, flipping over the fence by the ISU bullpen to grab a popup off the bat of junior Mike Fitzgerald. McClain extended the game with a two-out single to center, but Hayes flied out to right to end the game.
Junior Josh Negele started the game for Indiana State, tossing five innings with two strikeouts. Junior's Tyler Pazik (1-2) and Kurt Kudrecki closed out the game for the Sycamores.
Pearson (2-for-3) tallied a multi-hit game for Indiana State, with Ort hitting his fifth home run of the season. Ort finishes his career at Indiana State with 202 career RBIs, the most in school history.
Indiana State's 2013 senior class of Casey McCurdy, Devin Moore, Robby Ort, Jordan Pearson, Tyler Fehringer, Koby Kraemer and Taylor Shaw never saw a losing season in their respective time at ISU.
