NEW ORLEANS, La. – Despite a fast start, the Indiana State Women's Basketball team couldn't rebound from a 14-point deficit as it fell to Tulane in the championship game of the Tulane/DoubleTree Classic on Sunday afternoon. Indiana State drops to 5-6 overall as it wraps up non-conference play for the 2013-14 season.
The Sycamores went cold for extended periods against the Green Wave (9-3) including a 10 minute drought in the first half. ISU shot just 33.3 percent on the afternoon as was held to its lowest offensive output of the season with 45 points on the day.
Senior guard Bilqis Abdul-Qaadir led her squad with 15 points and four rebounds. Junior forward Racheal Mahan followed with nine points and nine boards while sophomore forward Marina Laramie dropped eight points, grabbed eight rebounds and a team-high three steals.
ISU opened up the contest on a 7-0 run before Tulane found the back of the rim nearly four minutes in. Tulane clawed its way back to lead at the 12 minute media timeout to lead 9-8. The Sycamores went cold, as Tulane increased its lead to 10 with 4:30 to play in the opening half.
Down 25-18 at the break, ISU went on a 15-2 run in the first part of the second half as senior guard Anna Munn's three pointer with 10:43 to play forced a Tulane timeout with the score knotted at 38 all.
However, the game came to a standstill after a jumper by Tulane's Jamie Kaplan with 9:22 to play kept her team up by two for the next 5:12 as neither team could find a way to score.
The Green Wave didn't knock down a field goal for the final 4:40 of the game but went 8-for-10 from the charity stripe in that time to help seal the win.
Munn recorded seven points on the afternoon along with seven rebounds and dished out a team-high three assists. Juniors Stephanie Wittman, Chelsea Small and Natasha Zurek also knocked down buckets in the loss.
As a team, Indiana State shot just 11 percent from behind the arc (1-for-9) and got to the free throw line a season-low 10 times going 60 percent.
Munn and Abdul-Qaadir also earned spots on the all-tournament team.
The Sycamores return home on Jan. 3 as it opens up Missouri Valley Conference action against Northern Iowa. Tipoff is set for 7:05 p.m. in the Hulman Center and can be seen live on MVC TV.
