TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - Spring sports at Indiana State paused during a busy week of competition to join family, friends and the Indiana State athletic community to celebrate the accomplishments of the athletes and their respective teams so far this season at the Terre Haute Savings Bank Spring Sports Banquet.
Three of the four spring sports teams are at home this weekend with the men's and women's track & field squads the only team on the road as they travel down to Bloomington, Ind., for the Polytan Invitational on Saturday and Sunday.
The Sycamore women's golf team is hosting the school's first ever women's golf tournament and it is a big one as Indiana State hosts the 2012 State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Women's Golf Championship Sunday through Tuesday at the Country Club of Terre Haute.
Indiana State baseball is working down the last few weeks of the regular season and hosts Dallas Baptist for a non-conference weekend series, part of a 12-game homestand that also includes a visit from Illinois Tuesday and a four-game series with Nebraska-Omaha Apr. 27-29.
Sycamore softball plays their final series at home this season as they host Missouri Valley Conference rival Wichita State for three games Saturday and Sunday.
Indiana State women's golf coach Greg Towne presented three awards during the night's recognition ceremonies including Most Improved to McCall Christopher, Team Leadership to Christina Beyerl, and the Coaches Award to Emily Dixon.
Sycamore women's track & field coach Angela Martin presented four awards with Felisha Johnson named the Most Valuable Player on the team. Kacie Klem received the team leadership award with Leeann Michl receiving the Coaches Award and Macey Black named Most Improved on the team.
John McNichols, Indiana State men's track & field coach, also presented four awards during the ceremonies. Brandon Pounds was named the Most Valuable Player on the team this year while Major Clay receive the Team Leadership Award, Andrew Stull the Coaches Award, and Kevin Piraino named the Most Improved on the team.
Baseball head coach Rick Heller and softball head coach Shane Bouman will present their awards at the conclusion of the season for their respective teams.
Three Sycamores were honored with the Hillman Award which is Indiana State's oldest athletic award dating back to 1923. The award is presented annually to the student-athlete who has good health, posture, technical skills, and sportsmanship, and is generally recognized as ISU's best all-around male and female student-athletes.
The 2012 Hillman Awards were presented to men's basketball player Jordan Printy. ISU women's cross country athlete Kacie Klem, and Sycamore soccer player Alison Gasparovich.
