ORLANDO, Fla.—The Indiana State softball team split a pair of games against Penn and Holy Cross during the second day of the Rebel Spring Games. The Sycamores started off the day with a 0-2 loss to Penn before rebounding to take a 9-7 win over Holy Cross.
Game One:
The Sycamores dropped the first game of the day in a pitchers duel against Penn by a final score of 2-0 in a game that saw a combined eight hits between the two teams.
Neither team recorded a hit until junior Mackenzie Connelly broke through in the bottom of the second inning with a single to left field. Senior Lindsey Beisser then followed Connelly with a single to right field but the Sycamores could not get a run across.
The Quakers then responded in the top of the third inning by scoring two runs off two hits to take a 2-0 lead over the Sycamores.
The Sycamores could not recover and fell by a final score of 2-0.
Game Two:
The Sycamores rebounded in their second game of the day against Holy Cross as they took a 9-7 win.
The Sycamores got on the board early as sophomore Shelby Wilson scored in the top of the first inning when senior Olivia Andres doubled to give ISU a 1-0 lead.
ISU then added four more runs to its lead in the top of the second inning to give the Sycamores a 5-0 advantage.
In the top of the third inning the Sycamore offense struck again when seniors Hailey Tinsman and Alyssa Doyle scored off a two-run double by senior Alyssa Heller to give the Sycamores a 7-0 lead.
The Crusaders did not go down without a fight as they scored seven runs, three of them earned to tie the game at 7-7 in the bottom of the fifth inning.
The Sycamores responded, however, and retook the lead in the top of the sixth inning Freshman Megan Stone doubled to score junior Alex Lucas and then Lucas scored off a single from Wilson.
The Crusaders could not respond as the Sycamores went on to win by a final score of 9-7.
Wilson finished the game 3-3 from the plate with two RBI's and a run scored. Junior Kristen Felker got the win for the Sycamores while senior Lindsey Beisser was credited with the save.
The Sycamores will now take a day off before returning to play at the Rebel Games in a double header against Sacred Heart on Wednesday.
