HAUTE, Ind. - The non-starters for the Missouri State
Bears scored a combined 41 points on Friday night, sending the visitors to a
68-58 victory over the Indiana State women's basketball inside Hulman Center.
The loss drops ISU to 12-15 on the season and 6-9 in the Missouri Valley
Conference. MSU remains atop the conference standings with their ninth straight
win, moving to 19-6 overall, 12-3 in league play.
Missouri State never trailed on Friday, beginning the game on a 9-3 run over
the opening three minutes of the game. Seniors Brittany Schoen and Deja Mattox
responded with three-pointers on back-to-back possessions for ISU to tie the
score at 9-9, but an 11-0 Bears run over the next three and a half minutes put
MSU up 20-9 with 12:36 left in the first half.
Indiana State got within five points, at 31-26 with 3:16 left on a free-throw
by senior Shannon Thomas, but the Bears took a 33-26 lead into the locker room.
Thomas led ISU with 10 points and seven rebounds at the half, while Schoen and
junior Taylor Whitley each added five. In the opening half, Missouri State's
bench tallied a 20-0 advantage against Indiana State's non-starters, led by
seven points each from senior Jaleshia Roberson and junior Whitney Edie.
The Sycamores cut the Bears lead to four points at 33-29 with 18:26 to play on
a layup by Thomas, but MSU came back with a 14-2 run of their own over the next
seven minutes to take a 47-31 lead with 11:41 remaining.
Missouri State took their largest lead of the game with 4:57 on the clock, when
a jumper by senior Lacey Boshe put the Bears in front 67-46. ISU held MSU
without a field goal from that point forward, closing the game on a 12-1 run.
Thomas posted her 11th double-double of the season, going for 18
points and 13 rebounds. Mattox joined her fellow senior in double-figures, adding
10 points to push her career total to 999.
Sophomore Karly Buer led Missouri State with 13 points, while Roberson (12) and
senior Jasmine Malone (11) each hit double-digits off the bench. MSU's bench-scoring
advantage for the game was 41-5, as Missouri State's bench outscored their
starters, 41-27.
The loss snaps a 15-game winning streak for the Sycamores on Senior Weekend,
dating back to the 2000-01 season. ISU will look to keep its 10-game Senior Day
winning streak going on Sunday, when the Sycamores take on Wichita State at
3:05 p.m. Indiana State will honor Mattox, Schoen and Thomas following the
game.
