SETTING THE STAGE
Indiana State continues year two of the Greg Lansing era on Saturday, February 18, when the Sycamores travel to Butler (16-12, 10-6 Horizon League) for the annual SEARS Bracketbusters contest. Tip-off is set for 2:07 (ET) inside historic Hinkle Fieldhouse. The game can be seen live locally on WAWV-TV as well as in Central Indiana on My-WNDY with Anthony Calhoun and Ralph Reiff on the call. The game will also be broadcast live locally on the radio via ESPN Radio 92.7 FM, as Brian Fritz and Matt Renn describe the action with an internet broadcast available on GoSycamores.com. THE BUTLER SERIES
Butler owns a 67-55 lead in the all-time series which dates back to 1904. The Bulldogs are one of six schools which Indiana State has faced more than 100 times in the history of the program. The series had been dormant since the 2007-08 campaign when Butler won over the Sycamores inside Hinkle Fieldhouse. ISU had won the three meeting prior to the Butler win in 2007. The Bulldogs own a 46-21 margin in games played in Indianapolis. The longest game in the history of the Sycamore program came in the form of a 95-92 Butler victory in four overtimes on December 27, 1986 inside Hinkle Fieldhouse.

Add in his seven assists and seven rebounds, Odum is the first player to go 34-7-7 in the NCAA this season. Odum is the first college basketball player to post 17 made free throws and seven assists in the same game since North Dakota State's Ben Woodside did it in 2008 against Stephen F. Austin. Odum's 34 points marked the first Sycamore with a 30-point game since Marico Stinson's 37 points in December of 2006 against Drake and is the fourth-highest single game performance in the MVC this year.

The Indiana State Head Coach
Indiana State head coach Greg Lansing (South Dakota, 1990) is 36-25 (.590) overall in his second season as a head coach. He is 19-15 all-time in MVC games, including a 13-4 mark at home and a 6-11 mark on the road. During his career, he is 21-5 in all home games, 9-16 on the road, 6-4 in neutral court contests and 12-4 in games decided by five points or less. Lansing is 0-0 all-time against Butler, and is coaching his first-ever game inside Hinkle Fieldhouse. With the Trees, Lansing is 2-2 in overtime games and 24-0 when holding teams to 63 points or less. Saturday's game is Greg Lansing's 62nd as Indiana State head coach. Lansing is the second head coach to lead the Sycamores to the NCAA Tournament in their rookie campaign in the history of the program, with the other being Bill Hodges leading ISU to a 33-1 record and a Final Four appearance in the 1979 NCAA Tournament. Lansing was just the 14th rookie head coach in the history of the MVC to lead his team to 20 victories during their debut season.

A Little History
Indiana State is currently in its 116th season of college basketball at the school. The Sycamores are 1,383-1,192 all-time on the hardwood. Indiana State's game at Oral Roberts last season was the historic 2,500th game in the history of the program.
Jake Odum Posts Career-High 34 Points Against Illinois State
Indiana State sophomore Jake Odum tallied a career-high and team season-high 34 points against Illinois State on February 14 inside Hulman Center against Illinois State. Odum's 34 points are the fourth-highest single-game total in the Missouri Valley Conference this year and marks the first 30 point scoring performance by a Sycamore since Marico Stinson posted 37 against Drake in 2006. Adding in his seven rebounds and seven assists, Odum is the only player in the NCAA to go 34-7-7 in a game this year. He finished the game with an 8-of-12 mark from the field and was 17-of-21 from the free throw line. He is the first player to record at least 17 free throws and seven assists in the same game since North Dakota State's Ben Woodside did it in 2008 against Stephen F. Austin. His 17 free throws made are a season-best in the MVC and represent seventh-most ever made in a MVC contest. The 17 free throws made are the most since Northern Iowa's Adam Koch converted 18 against Missouri State in January of 2009. Odum's 21 attempts from the charity stripe is sixth-best in the MVC record book for a conference game and are the most since Drake's Lonnie Randolph attempted 24 (making 22) in 2005 against Northern Iowa.
One More Win Needed To Reach At Least 17 For Third Consecutive Season; Would Be A First Since Larry Bird Era
One more Indiana State victory in the final three regular season games would give the Sycamores at least 17 regular season victories for the third consecutive season, which would be the first time three Indiana State teams have reached that mark in succession since the 1976-77, 1977-78 & 1978-79 teams achieved that lofty status. ISU has won 17 regular season games in each of the last two years. The Sycamores won 25 in 76-77, 19 in 77-78 and 26 in 78-79.
Sycamores Set Three NCAA Records For 3-Point Shooting Against Southern Illinois
Indiana State set a trio of NCAA records as part of its 78-68 home court victory on February 11 against Southern Illinois. The Sycamores were a perfect 12-of-12 from 3-point range, which is the most 3-point makes and attempts in a single-game without missing a shot ever amongst all levels of NCAA competition. The best previous NCAA Division I perfect game from 3-point range belonged to Minnesota who was 9-of-9 in 2009. Additionally, the Sycamores 12-of-12 mark from behind the arch is the best percentage for a team with at least 10 attempts, besting Ohio State's 14-of-15 mark on March 6, 2011 and the 12 made 3-pointers in a row is the most consecutive 3-pointers made in a single-game by one team since 1987. ISU's 64.1 percent shooting mark (25-of-39) is its best overall shooting percentage in a game since 1992.
Jake Odum Fills Up The Stat Sheet Against Bradley And Southern Illinois
Jake Odum averaged 12.5 points, 8.5 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 2.0 steals per game as the Sycamores hit the road to take on Bradley and downed Southern Illinois at home. Odum hit 8-of-19 shots from the field (42.1 percent), including a 3-pointer and was 8-of-11 at the free throw line (72.7 percent). Odum scored 15 points at Bradley to go with 11 rebounds as he recorded his third double-double of the season and the fourth of his career. He added a 4-of-5 mark at the free throw line (80 percent) with an assist and a steal. He tallied 10 points (3-of-5) from the field and was 4-of-6 at the free throw line with six rebounds, seven assists and three steals versus the Salukis. His seven assists helped make possible a perfect NCAA record 12-of-12 shooting performance for the Sycamores from 3-point range against Southern Illinois.
Jake Odum One Of Three Players Nationally To Average High Numbers In Points, Rebounds, And Assists
Indiana State sophomore Jake Odum is averaging 11.6 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 5.3 assists per game this season. He is one of just three players nationally to average that many points, rebounds and assists during the 2011-12 campaign. Jesse Sanders of Liberty is averaging 12.6 ppg, 7.7 rpg and 8.1 apg while Kaylon Williams of Milwaukee is averaging 10.9 ppg, 5.2 rpg and 6.0 apg so far this year to join Odum with that same lofty national statistical status.
Jordan Printy Break Out Of 3-Point Skid In A Big Way Against Southern Illinois & Illinois State
Jordan Printy broke out his recent 3-point shooting slump in a big way against Southern Illinois (Feb. 11) and Illinois State (Feb. 14) as he connected on all six of his 3-point attempts versus the Salukis and was 4-of-6 versus the Redbirds, as he has hit 10 of his last 12 attempts from long range. Printy was mired in a 1-for-12 3-point skid as he went 0-of-2 against Drake and was 0-of-5 against Wichita State. He hit 1-of-5 at Bradley before breaking out of it with the 6-of-6 shooting performance against Southern Illinois, which is the best performance to date in the MVC and trails only three 7-of-7 performances nationally this season. His 18 points and six treys against SIU tied career highs set in 2010 at Missouri State.
Sycamores Travels To Butler For 2012 SEARS BRACKETBUSTERS
Indiana State travels to Butler for the 2012 SEARS Bracketbusters game this Saturday as the Sycamores and Bulldogs renew an in-state rivalry for 123rd time in a series that has sat dormant since a 76-48 Butler victory on November 14, 2007 at Hinkle Fieldhouse. The Butler game will mark the eighth time that the Sycamores have participated in the Bracketbusters series with Indiana State holding a 3-4 record (1-2 home, 2-2 away).
Sycamores Enjoy Three Game MVC Winning Streak For The Sixth Straight Season
With Indiana State's 61-54 victory over Drake on February 1, the Sycamores enjoyed a three-game Missouri Valley Conference winning streak. ISU has now won at least three straight league games in each of the last six campaigns.
Jake Odum Nationally-Ranked In Assists and Steals While Near The Top Of The Valley In Both
Indiana State sophomore guard Jake Odum is third in the Missouri Valley Conference with a 5.3 assists per game average. That mark is ranked 47th nationally. Odum recorded a career-high 12 assists against Fairfield as part of the Old Spice Classic. Odum is second in the MVC in steals per game with a 1.9 average, which ranks 55th nationally.
Good Starter On The Battery
Indiana State is 10-5 on the season when the Sycamores' starting five outscores the opponents' starting five. ISU's starters outscored the opponent's twice against Louisiana-Monroe and against Green Bay plus Texas Tech, Fairfield, Maryville, Evansville, Northern Iowa, Southern Illinois and Illinois State this season and won. ISU starters outscored Minnesota, Boise State, Missouri State , Wichita State and at Bradley, but fell to each. Under second-year head coach Greg Lansing, the Sycamores are 22-7 when the ISU starting five scores more than their opponent's counterparts.
63 Is The Magic Number
The Sycamores win by the score of 61-54 over Drake on February 1 was ISU's ninth this season in which they have held an opponent to 63 points or less and earned the victory. Indiana State is 9-0 this season when holding an opponent under that total. Under second-year head coach Greg Lansing, the Sycamores are a perfect 24-0 when allowing less than 63 points to the opposition (including a 10-0 mark when holding teams to 53 or less). The Sycamores are allowing 65.5 points per game this year, which ranks fifth best in the MVC.
Carl Richard Ranks Seventh All-Time In Sycamore Rebounding Record Book, Is 34th Member of ISU 1,000-Point Club
Senior Carl Richard pulled down five rebounds against Illinois State which gives him 695 for his career and is in seventh place all-time in the history of the Sycamore basketball program. Richard needs 36 more to catch George Pillow (1968-71) for sixth place. Additionally, Carl Richard scored nine points versus the Redbirds and has 1,005 career points which makes him the 34th member of ISU's 1,000-point club. Richard is also trying to become just the fifth Sycamore to record at least 1,000 career points and 700 career rebounds in his career. The four who have done that already are Larry Bird (2,850/1,247), Jerry Newsom (2,147, 953), Matt Renn (1,347/789) and Jim Cruse (1,049/771).
Sycamore Success Inside Hulman Center Under Greg Lansing
The Sycamores are now 21-5 (.808) inside Hulman Center under second-year head coach Greg Lansing. The Sycamores have won 12 of their last 14 home games. Additionally, the Sycamores have won 13 of their last 17 MVC games at home.
Printy Is Second On Indiana State 3-Point List
Indiana State junior Jordan Printy currently has 206 career 3-pointers and most recently passed Eddie Bird for second on the ISU all-time list. Printy is one of just 14 Sycamores in the history of the program to hit at least 100 3-point field goals in a career and is one of just two to post at least 200. Printy needs 77 more to tie Michael Menser for first on the ISU all-time 3-point list with 283. Additionally, Printy is the older brother of Iowa women's basketball sophomore Jaime Printy who was the 2010 Big Ten Freshman Of The Year. The Iowa women's basketball team received an at large bid into the NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament also last season made Jordan and Jaime the only brother/sister combo in the Big Dance in 2011.
Indiana State Outrebounds Wichita State For Second Time This Season
Indiana State won the rebounding battle against Wichita State by a 40-37 margin, marking the second time this year that the Sycamores have taken down more caroms that the Shockers. ISU also outrebounded WSU by a 42-36 margin on January 15 inside Hulman Center. WSU has lost the rebounding battle just three times this year, two of which were by the Sycamores and the other was at Drake as part of their triple overtime loss at the Drake Knapp Center.
Sycamores Defense Was Key To Victory Over Drake
Indiana State limited Drake on February 1 to just 33.3 percent shooting from the field (18-of-54) which was the best field goal percentage defensive mark for the Sycamores this season. It tops the 36 percent output the Sycamores put forth against Northern Iowa on January 25 to start ISU's current three-game winning streak. For the season, ISU is 9-1 when holding teams under a 42.1 field goal percentage and are 4-0 when the opposition connects on 18 field goals or less. ISU held Drake without a field goal for over eight of the final nine minutes to earn the 61-54 victory and gave up just two Drake field goals in the final nine minutes of play.
Sycamores Down Nationally-Ranked Vanderbilt On The Road
Indiana State's win over No. 25 Vanderbilt was its first over a nationally-ranked opponent since a 72-64 home court victory over No. 14 Butler on December 9, 2006. The win over Vanderbilt was the first for the Sycamores over a nationally-ranked road opponent since a 63-60 win over No. 15 Indiana in Assembly Hall on December 12, 1999. The win over Vanderbilt was also the first by a Sycamore team over a member of the Southeastern Conference since a 1984 home court victory over the Commodores.
Triple-Double For Odum And Tournament Record To Boot
Sycamore sophomore guard Jake Odum battled a foot injury while playing three games in four days at the 2011 Old Spice Classic. After two solid performances in the first two days of the event, Odum saved his best for last as he posted 10 points, 10 rebounds and 12 assists against Fairfield on November 27. That triple-double was the first by a Sycamore since Larry Bird posted one in 1979 versus Drake and the first by a member of the MVC in 14 seasons. Additionally, the 12 assists are an Old Spice Classic single-game record. His 12 assists is the first double digit assist total in his career and the first by a Sycamore since Michael Menser had 11 against Wichita State in 2001.
Indiana State Goes 2-1 At 2011 Old Spice Classic
Indiana State downed Texas Tech and Fairfield while falling to Minnesota as the Sycamores put together a 2-1 record at the 2011 Old Spice Classic held over Thanksgiving Weekend on the campus of Walt Disney World Resort. The Sycamores have now won two games in a row of over members of the Big 12 Conference (Texas Tech and Oklahoma in the 2001 NCAA Tournament). Jake Odum was named to the Old Spice Classic All-Tournament Team. ISU is the third MVC team to play in the event and the third place finish is the highest by any league team.
Indiana State Opens Tournament Play With A Win Over BCS School For First Time Since 1973
Indiana State's victory over Texas Tech in the opening round of the 2011 Old Spice Classic marked the second consecutive year that the Sycamores have opened an early season multi-team event with a win. ISU downed Texas Pan-American in the opening game of a tournament at Loyola-Chicago last season. Prior to the victory over Texas Tech, the last time a Sycamore team opened a tournament such as the Old Spice Classic with a win over a BCS school came on December 27, 1973 when ISU downed Florida State in the first game of the Bear Classic, played on the campus of Mercer University in Macon, Ga.
Sycamore Signees
Indiana State second year head coach Greg Lansing announced a pair of signees during the NCAA Early Signing Period in November of 2011. ISU has inked TJ Bell (Charleston, Ill./Charleston HS) and Rhett Smith (Sullivan, Ind./Sullivan HS) to national letters of intent and they will begin their Sycamore careers as freshman in time for the 2012-13 campaign.
Bell is a 6-8 guard/forward who will begin his senior season at Charleston (Ill.) High School later this month. He was listed early in his career as one of the Top 25 players in the state of Illinois and averaged 13.9 points as well as 8.2 rebounds as a junior. Bell was named to the All-Apollo Conference in 2011 for his Charleston team which finished with a 16-13 record.
Smith is a 6-7 post player who will begin his senior campaign next week for Sullivan High School and head coach Jeff Moore. He has been the Golden Arrows leading scorer each of his first three seasons of playing at the varsity level. He averaged 17.3 points per game last season as a junior despite missing playing time due to a hand injury. Smith connected on 61.6 percent of his shots from the field. He scored a season-best 28 points against West Vigo during the 2010-11 campaign.
