Sycamore Track & Field Visits Purdue Saturday In Battle For Gene Edmonds Cup

TERRE HAUTE, IND.  - The 2012 Indoor Track & Field season continues on Saturday as the Indiana State Sycamores travel to West Lafayette, Ind., for the annual Edmonds Cup competition against the Purdue Boilermakers. This will be the 17th renewal of the Edmonds Cup competition with the Boilermakers winning each of the previous 16 competitions.

With added talent and depth, the Sycamores are hopeful that they can bring the Cup to Terre Haute for the first time.

"This meet has a long history," John McNichols, Indiana State men's track & field coach, said. "It is a tough place to go run. Purdue runs with pride and does not want to be defeated by us. The facility is also a great place for performances which makes this meet a lot tradition, is fun for athletes, coaches and fans, and one that I hope continues for a long time to come."

Both the men and women have won against the Boilermakers but the combined score has not been enough to wrestle the cup away from Purdue. To accomplish that feat, Indiana State knows that they be well prepared in all three phases of the competition.

"We need to have good warm-ups, compete hard, and then take care of ourselves with a good cool down," McNichols said. "We had that last week at Illinois State and it showed in the results."

One of the premier events on the men's side will be the high jump where three former Indiana state champions and one former Illinois state champion will square off. Purdue's Geoff Davis has won the event the last two years and finished fourth at the NCAA Indoor Championships in 2011. He will be going up against Indiana State senior Major Clay and freshman Jonathon Christensen and Boilermaker teammate Derrick Spight.

"We will have to have everything go right for us to do our part in bringing the Cup to Terre Haute with more wins than second and thirds," Angela Martin, Indiana State women's track & field coach said. "Purdue has a great advantage in being at home and competes hard against us every year."

The Sycamore women lost by just a point two years ago and Martin believes that this year's squad is just as good or better.

"We do not have the studs that we did on that team but we have better overall talent and are more balanced," Martin said. "We just have to go there, get out in front and stay there."

The Edmonds Cup is named after Gene Edmonds, an Indiana State graduate and former coach of the Boilermakers. The winner is determined by the combined score of the men's and women's dual meets. The Sycamore men were edged Purdue 88-74 a year ago while the ISU women were defeated 100-62 which allowed the Boilermakers to retain the Cup with a 188-136 victory.

The competition begins at 11 a.m. (ET) with the weight throw, pole vault and long jump. The shot put will follow the weight throw competition with the triple jump following the long jump. High jump will start at 11:30 a.m. (ET). The track events will start at 1 p.m. (ET) with the mile run. Also being contested will be the 400 meters, 60 meters, 800 meters, 60 meter hurdles, 600 meters, 200 meters, 3000 meters, and 4x400 relay. The meet is expected to conclude at approximately 3:30 p.m. (ET).

The Sycamore women lost a close meet last week but remain on track towards their goal of peaking at the Missouri Valley Indoor Championships.

"It was a very close meet and we lost to a team that is very good," Angie Martin, Indiana State women's track & field coach said. "They were top three at the outdoor championships last year and were the MVC champions in cross country this season. The wins we had were hard fought but there were areas where our drive and heart just were not there. That has to improve for us to compete well at the conference championships."

The Indiana State defeated Illinois State for the seventh straight year behind a great team effort.

"We had to compete for every point to make the 'Cup' victory happen," McNichols said. "We won 11 of the 14 events and that is evidence of a well balanced team. We will need that same team effort his weekend against Purdue."
