TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - Indiana State will venture on the road for the first time this season as they travel to Durham, N.H., for the Holly Young Invitational hosted by the University of New Hampshire. This is the final tune-up for the Sycamores before they open the 2011 Missouri Valley Conference season on Sept. 16.
The Sycamores (4-3) are coming off two straight home tournaments where they were the dominant team but could not pick up the championship in either tournament.
Indiana State opens at 7 p.m. (ET) Friday when the go up against the New Hampshire Wildcats (0-8). The Sycamores will play twice on Saturday as they meet the Connecticut Huskies (4-3) at 10 a.m. (ET) and wrap up action against the Fairfield Stags (2-5) at 4:30 p.m. (ET).
SCOUTING INDIANA STATE -
The Sycamores started out well but could not sustain the effort as they won their first game of the 2011 ISU Drury Inn/ACICS Volleyball Challenge but then dropped the next two. Indiana State swept visiting Savannah State 3-0 (25-8, 25-5, 25-8) but then lost to eventual champion Western Illinois 0-3 (17-25, 20-25, 26-28), and wrapped up tournament play with a loss to SIU Edwardsville 1-3 (23-25, 25-23, 17-25, 22-25).
Three Sycamores are averaging over two kills per set led by junior outside hitter Morgan Dall who has 116 kills this season and a 4.83 kills per set average. Senior middle blocker Stacy Qualizza has 62 kills and a 2.58 kills per set average while junior right side hitter Shea Doran, who missed last weekend's tournament with an injury, has 29 kills and a 2.07 kills per set average.
Senior setter Shelbi Fouty continues to be the top set up artist for Indiana State with 250 assists this season and an average of 10.42 assists per set. Senior libero Kiya James has 122 digs this season while averaging 5.08 digs per set. Doran and freshman middle blocker Kyla Thomas have 13 blocks this season.
SCOUTING NEW HAMPSHIRE -
The University of New Hampshire Wildcats of the America East Conference dropped three games at the University of Pittsburgh Invitational last weekend and also dropped a mid-week road match at Northeastern as the Wildcats continue to seek their first win of the season. The Wildcats lost 1-3 (15-25, 25-23, 17-25, 11-25) to Pittsburgh, were defeated 1-3 (25-21, 23-25, 18-25, 20-25) by Miami (Ohio), and were swept by Penn State 0-3 (14-25, 11-25, 11-25) at the Pittsburgh Invitational. New Hampshire travelled to Northeastern on Tuesday and was swept 0-3 (14-25, 17-25, 20-25).
Senior outside hitter Amy Keding leads the team in kills with 58 (2.19 per set) while sophomore right side hitter Morgan Thatcher is second with 53 kills (1.96 per set). Junior setter Jansan Falcusan had 136 assists this season (5.04 per set) to lead the team while junior defensive specialist Jessie Schnepp had 95 digs (3.65 per set). Senior outside hitter Lauren Laguerre and senior middle blocker Jessy Dick each had 18 blocks.
SCOUTING CONNECTICUT -
The University of Connecticut Huskies of the Big East Conference swept to the team title of the UConn Toyota Classic but then dropped a mid-week game at home to Sacred Heart on Tuesday while dropped the Huskies to 4-3 on the season. UConn rolled past Holy Cross 3-0 (25-17, 25-11, 25-9), Howard 3-0 (25-18, 25-4, 25-18), and Binghamton 3-0 (25-21, 25-13, 25-22) to win the Toyota Classic. The Huskies hosted Sacred Heart on Tuesday and lost 1-3 (25-21, 25-27, 23-25, 19-25).
Three Huskies average over two kills per set led by senior outside hitter Jordan Kirk with 88 (4.19 per set). Junior outside hitter Mattison Quayle has 63 kills (2.86 per set) while freshman outside hitter Devon Maugle has 53 (2.41 per set). Junior setter Angela Roidt has 229 assists (10.41 per set) while junior libero Kelsey Maving has 104 digs (4.73 per set), and sophomore middle blocker Jackie Wattles has 15 blocks.
SCOUTING FAIRFIELD -
The Fairfield University Stags of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference dropped their first two games but came back to win their final two contests at the Hofstra Invitational this past weekend and enter this weekend's action with a 2-5 record. The Stags were swept by Princeton 0-3 (20-25, 19-25, 19-25) and lost to Hofstra 0-3 (22-25, 23-25, 23-25) as they opened the season with five straight losses. Fairfield came back with a 3-1 (25-20, 25-23, 21-25, 25-8) win over NJIT and a 3-1 (25-15, 22-25, 25-15, 26-24) victory over St. Francis (NY) to close the tournament with a two-game winning streak.
Five players are averaging over two kills per set including junior outside hitter Brianna Dixion with 65 kills (3.25 per set), freshman outside hitter Camille Coffey with 57 kills (2.38 per set), freshman outside hitter Marilyn Peizer with 32 kills (2.29 per set), freshman right side Caitlin Stapleton with 54 kills (2.25 per set), and freshman middle blocker Lindsay Weaver with 39 kills (2.05 per set).
Sophomore setter Rachel Romansky has 236 assists (9.44 per set), freshman outside hitter Camille Coffey and freshman defensive specialist Carsen Mata both have 77 digs (3.21 per set), and junior middle blocker Kendal Dirkin has 19 blocks.

VS. NEW HAMPSHIRE - This is the first meeting between Indiana State and New Hampshire.
VS. CONNECTICUT - This is the second meeting between Indiana State and Connecticut with the Huskies winning 3-1 over the Sycamores at the 2000 Loyola-Marymount Tournament.
VS. FAIRFIELD - This is the second meeting between Indiana State and Fairfield with the Sycamores winning 3-0 over the Stags at the 1996 Army Tournament.
