TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - The Indiana State volleyball team had no trouble in dispatching the Savannah State Tigers in their opening game of the Drury Inn/ASICS Volleyball Challenge Saturday afternoon as they posted a 3-0 (25-8, 25-5, 25-8) victory on the home court.
Indiana State (4-1) will continue tournament play at 7 p.m. tonight when they meet the Western Illinois Fighting Leathernecks (4-2). Western Illinois opened the tournament with a 3-1 win over SIU Edwardsville. Savannah State and SIUE play at 4 p.m. today.
Junior Morgan Dall led the Sycamore offense with 12 kills in 20 attempts while senior Stacy Qualizza and freshman Samantha Kersting had six each. Junior Christie Fullenkamp and freshman Lindsay Barber had four each. Senior Shelbi Fouty had 34 assists in the game with senior Kiya James accumulating 13 digs.
The Sycamores rolled to a 7-0 lead in the opening set and Fouty closed out the win by serving the last nine points in a 25-8 ISU victory. Indiana State also dominated the second set as sophomore Monique Morris had eight straight serves as ISU took an 8-2 lead and the Sycamores never looked back in winning 25-5. The outcome was never in doubt in the third set as ISU was able to bring in a variety of players but still pulled way for a 25-8 win.
The Drury Inn/ASICS Volleyball Challenge wraps up on Sunday with Western Illinois playing Savannah State at 11 a.m. followed by Indiana State meeting SIU Edwardsville at 2 p.m.
