Thanks to a lot of early offense and the second consecutive strong outing by junior pitcher Lindsey Beisser, the Indiana State softball team (15-30, 4-18 MVC) sent their lone senior Stephanie Jonson out with a 6-1 win over the Bluejays of Creighton (23-25, 11-10 MVC) Sunday at Price Field.

After holding the Bluejays scoreless in the top of the first inning, the Sycamores wasted no time in getting runs accross the plate as they jumped out to a 3-0 lead after one inning of play.

Freshman center fielder Alex Baumgart got things going for the Sycamores in the bottom of the first inningwith an infield single followed by a walk to junior second baseman Stephanie Robinson. Junior first baseman Bailey Wittenauer then singled to left center to score Baumgart and get the Sycamores on the board first. Two batters later, junior third baseman Alyssa Marcum singled up the middle to score Robinson and make it a 2-0 Sycamore lead before Jonson singled up the middle to score Wittenauer and to extend the ISU lead to 3-0.

The Bluejays tried to respond in the top of the second inning when they recored a single and a triple to score a run and cut the Sycamore lead to 3-1, however, Beisser closed out the inning with two strikeouts.

The Sycamore bats came to life again in the bottom of the second inning as they added three more runs to their lead to take a 6-1 advantage after two complete innings of play.

Sophomore right fielder Kim Pierce got the inning started off for the Sycamores with a single to left field and then was advanced to second off a Baumgart ground out. Robinson then walked for the second consecutive time before Wittenauer doubled to left field to score Pierce and advance Robinson to third. Andres then kept the rally going as she doubled to center field to score Robinson and Wittenauer and make it a 6-1 Sycamore advantage.

The rest of the game neither team could really get any offense going until the top of the seventh inning when the Bluejays got one more run accross to cut the Sycamore lead to 6-2 but could get no closer as the Sycamores went on to win by a final score of 6-2 in their final home game of the 2011 season.

The Sycamores will play their final regular season series of the season next weekend when they travel to face the Panthers of Northern Iowa.
