After winning the series against Wichita State this past weekend, the Indiana State softball team (11-17, 2-6 MVC) dropped both games of a double header on the road to Southeast Missouri State Wednesday 10-8 and 4-2.
Game One
Junior first baseman Bailey Wittenauer hit a grand slam in the fourth inning and senior left fielder Stephanie Jonson hit a two-run home run in the top of the seventh inning but it was not enough as the Sycamores fell 10-8 in game one of a double header on the road to the Redhawks of Southeast Missouri State.
The Redhawks got off to a quick start as they jumped out to a 6-0 lead over the Sycamores after two complete innings of play before making it a 7-0 lead in bottom of the third inning.
The Sycamores responded in the top of fourth inning as the Sycamores scored six runs fueled by Wittenauer's grand slam over the left field wall to cut the Redhawks lead to 7-6.
The Redhawks added three more runs in the bottom of the sixth to extend their lead to 10-6.
The Sycamores once again responded as sophomore outfielder Mackenzie Connelly hit a ground ball up the middle to get the inning started. Two batters later Jonson crushed a two-run home run to center field to cut the lead to 10-8. The Sycamores could get no closer though as they would fall in the first game by a final score of 10-8.
Jonson finished the game 3-4 with two RBI's and two runs scored for the Sycamores.
Game Two
Just as in game one the Redhawks jumped out to an early lead as they scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning to take a 2-0 lead over the Sycamores.
The Sycamores stormed right back in the top of the third inning as catcher Olivia Andres led off the inning with a base hit to right field before Jonson reached first base on a throwing error on the SEMO short stop. Designated player Alex Lucas then advanced both runners on a sacrifice. Andres then scored on a passed ball and two batters later junior right fielder Hailey Tinsman hit an RBI single through the left side to score Jonson and tie the game at two.
The offense of both teams then began so struggle as neither team could get more than one hit in an inning until the bottom of the sixth when SEMO struck again.
The Redhawks led off the frame with back-to-back solo home runs to take a 4-2 lead over the Sycamores and the Sycamores could not respond as they dropped the second game of the double header by a final score of 4-2.s
