After sweeping both games of a double header on Saturday, the Indiana State softball team (11-15, 2-6 MVC) wasn't able to complete the series sweep on the road against Wichita State (9-24, 2-6 MVC) as they fell 10-2 to the Shockers on Sunday.
The Sycamores got off to a quick start as freshman center fielder Alex Baumgart led off the game with a walk before junior second baseman Stephanie Robinson reached on an error. Junior third baseman Alyssa Marcum advanced both runners with a sacrifice bunt before junior first baseman Bailey Wittenauer hit a two RBI single to give the Sycamores a 2-0 lead.
The Shockers responded in the bottom of the inning when they added one run of their own to cut the Sycamore advantage to 2-1.
Both team's offenses then went quiet until the bottom of the fifth inning when the Shockers struck again. The Sycamores allowed the Shockers four consecutive base hits to score three runs and to take a 4-2 lead over the Sycamores.
In the bottom of the sixth inning the Shockers then broke the game open, hitting three home runs, accounting for six runs to take a 10-2 lead over the Sycamores and ending the game due to the eight run rule.
Baumgart finished the game 1-1 with a run scored while Wittenauer finished the game 1-3 with two RBI's.
With the loss the Sycamores fall to 2-6 in Missouri Valley Conference play and 11-15 overall.
The Sycamores will return to action Wednesday when they travel to face Southeast Missouri State in a double header beginning at 4 p.m.
