The Indiana State softball team scored a combined 15 runs to sweep the Shockers of Wichita State on the road in a double header Saturday 9-3 and 7-3 to earn their first two win Missouri Valley Conference wins of the season.
Game One
The Indiana State offense struck early and often as they earned their first Missouri Valley Conference win of the season 9-3 on the road against the Shockers of Wichita State in the first game of the double header.
The Sycamores got off to a quick start with junior third baseman Alyssa Marcum hitting a two RBI double to give the Sycamores a 2-0 lead.
In the top of the third inning the Sycamores extended their lead to 3-0 but then broke the game wide open in the top of the fourth inning when junior first baseman Bailey Wittenauer crushed a three-run home run over the left centerfield wall to give the Sycamores a 7-0 advantage.
The Shockers responded with a run in the bottom half of the fourth inning to cut the Sycamores advantage to 6-1. However, the Sycamores added one run of their own in the top half of the fifth inning when freshman outfielder Alex Baumgart hit an RBI double to right field to score sophomore Mackenzie Connelly to make it 7-1.
In the bottom of the fifth inning the Shockers hit a two-run home run to cut the Sycamores lead to 7-3 but could get no closer as the Sycamores went on to extend their lead by two runs in the seventh to give the Sycamores a 9-3 win.
Sophomore pitcher Kristin Felker pitched a complete game for the Sycamores to get the win and to improve to 2-3.
Game Two
In game two the Shockers were the ones to get off to a quick start scoring two runs in the bottom half of the first inning to take a 2-0 lead over the Sycamores.
The Sycamore offense finally responded in the top of the fourth inning when junior Hailey Tinsman hit an RBI single to score junior Olivia Andres and to cut the Shocker lead to 2-1.
The very next inning the Sycamores used singles by freshman Shelby Wilson and junior Stephanie Robinson followed by a walk by Marcum and another single by Wittenauer to score three runs and take a 4-2 lead.
The Sycamores then added to their lead in the top of sixth inning. Tinsman led off with a base hit to left center field and was then scored on a fielding error while attempting to throw Wilson out at first. Robinson then scored Wilson with an RBI single to center field. Wittenauer then continued the Sycamores run with an RBI single down the left field line to make it a 7-2 Sycamore lead and seven unanswered runs for the Sycamores.
The Shockers responded in the bottom half of the sixth inning as they loaded the bases with just one out. Sophomore pitcher Kristen Felker walked in one run before getting the final two outs of the inning to cut the Sycamore lead to 7-3.
The Shockers could not close the gap any further as the Sycamores went on to win their second consecutive MVC game by a final score of 7-3.
Wittenauer finished the game 3-4 with two RBI's while Robinson went 2-3 with two RBI's and two runs scored.
The Sycamores will return to action Sunday at 1 p.m. when they will look to sweep the Shockers in the finale of the three-game series.
