Despite striking first the Indiana State softball team could not close the deal as the Hoosiers of Indiana University rallied to get past the Sycamores by a final score of 5-2 Thursday.
The Sycamores got on the board early as junior second baseman Stephanie Robinson got things going for the Sycamores with a single to the short stop. Junior first baseman Bailey Wittenauer then advanced Robinson to second with a sacrifice bunt before junior Olivia Andres singled down the left field line to score Robinson and give the Sycamores a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning.
Following the Sycamore score, neither team was able to get anything going offensively until the Sycamores struck again in the top of the fourth inning when senior left fielder Stephanie Jonson walked to get thing going. Freshman designated player Steviee Grove then advanced Jonson to second with a sacrifice bunt before junior right fielder Hailey Tinsman singled through the left side to advance Jonson to third who then scored on obstruction by the Hoosiers third baseman to give the Sycamores a 2-0 lead.
The Hoosiers responded though with three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning as they scored three runs and then added two more in the bottom of the fifth inning to take a 5-2 lead. The Sycamores could not get their offense going and eventually fell to the Hoosiers by a final score of 5-2
The Sycamores will return to action Saturday when they return home for another Missouri Valley Conference series against the Salukis of Southern Illinois. First pitch on Saturday will be at noon for a double header before finishing the series on Sunday, also with a noon start time.
