The Indiana State softball team (14-19, 3-8 MVC) got on top early in game one and used that momentum to carry them to a sweep of the Jaguars of IUPUI (10-25) Wednesday at Price Field by a score of 7-2 and 1-0.

Game One

The Sycamores got of to a red hot start in the bottom of the first inning as freshman center fielder Alex Baumgart got the team going with a leadoff double to left field to start the inning. Junior second baseman Stephanie Robinson walked before junior first baseman Bailey Wittenauer was hit by a pitcher to load the bases. Junior Olivia Andres then walked to score Baumgart and give the Sycamores a 1-0 lead. Junior third baseman Alyssa Marcum then crushed a ball to center field where it grazed the top of the fence and landed back in play to give her a two RBI stand up double and the Sycamores a 3-0 lead.

Freshman designated player Steviee Grove kept the inning going, after senior left fielder Stephanie Jonson grounded out, to score Andres and extend the Sycamore lead even further. Later in the inning, junior short stop Shelby Wilson reached on an error by her counterpart at short stop to score Marcum and Grove and give ISU a 6-0 lead over the Jaguars.

The Jaguars responded with a solo home run to center field to lead off the top of the second inning but could not cut any further into the Sycamore lead.

The Sycamores then extended their lead in the bottom of the sixth inning when Wittenauer doubled to right field to score Baumgart and make it a 7-1 Sycamore lead.

The Jaguars tried to rally in the top of the seventh but was only able to get one run across the plate as the Sycamores went on to win by a final score of 7-2.

Game Two

After a first game full of offense, the second game turned out to be a pitchers duel as neither team recorded a hit until the bottom of the third inning when Wilson got a base hit through the left side. Two batters later Robinson crushed a ball to the center field wall for an RBI stand up triple to score Wilson and give the Sycamores a 1-0 lead.

That lead was all sophomore pitcher Kristen Felker needed as she locked down the rest of the game allowing just two hits in her 1-0 complete game win to give the Sycamores a sweep of the Jaguars. 

Jonson finished the game for the Sycamores going 1-2 with a base on balls while Robinson went 1-3 with an RBI.

The Sycamores will return to action Thursday when they travel to play in-state rival Indiana University. First pitch between the Sycamores and Hoosiers is set for 3 p.m. in Bloomington, Ind.
